Key Players in the Overhaul of General Motors
President Barack Obama is taking on a daring — and expensive — plan to transform a core part of the U.S. industrial base to match his own vision of the auto sector’s future.
Chief executive Frederick “Fritz” Henderson has for years argued for breaking the taboos at General Motors — killing brands, shuttering dealers, chopping debt and rewriting union contracts.
When the Treasury Department decided earlier in the year to separate the roles of CEO and chairman at GM, the decision to name Kent Kresa chairman was a “no brainer,” one person involved in the decision said.
Even as a lame-duck president, United Auto Workers union leader Ron Gettelfinger has shown surprising strength amid the greatest-ever dismantling of union power and benefits.
No one has played a more central or contentious role in the auto bailout than Steven Rattner, the investment banker-turned-Treasury adviser who has led the Obama auto team since February.
Bankruptcy attorney Harvey R. Miller has been waiting a lifetime for a case like this.
