Wind energy will no longer be confined to a few megawatts of power as a drive towards clean and renewable energy has led to setting up of bigger wind farms across the globle.
The London Array offshore windfarm is all set to become the largest windfarm in the world following its scheduled completion in 2012 with a tottal capacity of 630 MW. An option to uprate the project to 1000 MW is also provided. Thus London Array windfarm will become the first in the 1-gigawatt class.
Siemens Energy received the order to connect the London Array offshore wind farm to the power supply network. The order volume is EUR128 million. Purchasers are Dong Energy, E.ON and Masdar, the wind farm’s owners. Siemens Energy was already appointed to supply the 175 wind turbines for the wind farm as well.
The wind farm is being erected in the Thames estuary approximately twenty kilometers off the Kent and Essex coasts. The project will generate energy that will be sufficient to supply 750,000 British households with eco-friendly electricity, which is equivalent to approximately a quarter of the population of Greater London. “Offshore wind farms of this size place particular demands in terms of grid access. We not only have the requisite technology and know-how but also a wealth of experience in connecting offshore wind farms to the grid,” said Udo Niehage, CEO of the Power Transmission Division of Siemens Energy.

wind power is a great technology to use if you can find the right area..and can absorb the start up costs..i agree with this sort of renewable..its a good thing..just strange to see the english coming up with a good idea
this one is placed in the ocean but more familiar ones are on the hill tops dotted with windmills..
