China has the fastest trains now
China’s reputation of an emerging country and a fast growing technology nation turned out to be well deserved. After only 4 years of work, China’s authorities inaugurated the fastest rail link in the world, where a train connecting the modern cities of Guangzhou and Wuhan can operate at a maximum speed of 394 kilometers per hour (244 miles)
Only a few days after the Eurostar train movement was perturbed, where many Eurostar passengers from 3 trains were stuck for hours in the English Channel without food and water; China has launched the world’s fastest train called Harmony Express able to reach a maximum speed of 394.2 kilometers per hour (244.9 miles).
The goal behind this project, which began in 2005, as part of China’s 293 billion dollars program to increase the national rail network from 86,000 kilometers to 120,000 kilometers, was to link Guangzhou, a business hub in southern China near Hong Kong, with the capital Beijing, and reduce the ten-and-a-half hour journey for the 1,069 kilometers to just 3 hours.
France was the owner of the fastest train in the world operating at an average speed of 277 km per hour (172 miles), followed by the Japanese high speed train which is capable of operating at an average speed of 243 km per hour (150 miles). Yet the speed at which Harmony Express can operate will make it indisputably the fastest train in the world.
China’s attempt to revolutionize and speed up the railway system was supported by several foreign firms like Siemens, Alstom and Bombardier which built the train using advanced aerodynamics technology, as the trains will need less energy when traveling at the same time being more stable.
However, China does not plan to stop here, as it intends to build 42 high-speed lines by 2012. The train ticket cost about 90 dollars for second class and 140 dollars for first class. If this project finds success, in the near future, other countries will be encouraged to follow China’s footsteps and start building the base for the high speed trains transportation method, which will help us travel faster, safer and cheaper.
