Full body scanners at US airports..who wins?

http://www.ktradionetwork.com/2010/01/05/homeland-security-secretary-linked-to-body-scanner-manufacturer/

Since the attempted bombing of a US airliner on Christmas Day, former Homeland Security secretary Michael Chertoff has given dozens of media interviews touting the need for the federal government to buy more full-body scanners for airports.

What he has made little mention of is that the Chertoff Group, his security consulting agency, includes a client that manufactures the machines. Chertoff disclosed the relationship on a CNN program Wednesday, in response to a question.

An airport passengers’ rights group on Thursday criticized Chertoff’s use of his former government credentials to advocate for a product that benefits his clients.

“Mr. Chertoff should not be allowed to abuse the trust the public has placed in him as a former public servant to privately gain from the sale of full-body scanners under the pretense that the scanners would have detected this particular type of explosive,’’ said Kate Hanni, founder of FlyersRights.org, which opposes the use of the scanners.

Chertoff’s advocacy for the technology dates to his time in the Bush administration. In 2005, Homeland Security ordered the government’s first batch of the scanners – five from California-based Rapiscan Systems. Rapiscan is one of only two companies that make full-body scanners in accordance with current contract specifications required by the federal government.

Currently 40 body scanners are in use among 19 US airports. The number is expected to skyrocket, at least in part because of the Christmas Day incident. The Transportation Security Administration has said it will order 300 more machines.

In the summer, TSA purchased 150 more machines from Rapiscan with $25 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds. Rapiscan was the only company that qualified for the contract because it had developed technology that performs the screening using a less-graphic body imaging system, which is also less controversial. (Since then, another company, L-3 Communications, has qualified for future contracts, but no new contracts have been awarded.)

  1. Chertoff has business affialiations to nudescanner producing companies? interesting!

This nudescanner debate is international. Last year the attempt to introduce them failed, because they were labeled as nudescanners and the protest against them was large.

Now, in a real orwell newspeak twist, they are labeled as bodyscanners and another try to introduce them can be observed.

But the protest against starts to be digital organized and the german branch of the international pirate party movement held several flEshmob protests today at the airports of frankfurt, berlin and dusseldorf (reproduction recommended!). Take a look:

and another possible angle of all this
Study Looks Into How Full Body Scanners May Do Serious Damage To DNA
    Published on 01-09-2010
As new government directives are now mandating full body (terahertz) scanning (or pat down searches) of our private parts on all US inbound flights, a recent research article in arXiv points to potential negative health effects from the new technology. Terahertz waves penetrate non-conducting material like clothing, but then they deposit energy in the skin. Now researchers at the Center for Nonlinear Studies at Los Alamos National Laboratory have shown that terahertz radiation may be able to do some serious damage to the DNA it encounters when bouncing off your body
    Physics arXiv Blog explains:
Alexandrov [Boian Alexandrov at the Center for Nonlinear Studies at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico --ed.] and co have created a model to investigate how THz fields interact with double-stranded DNA and what they’ve found is remarkable. They say that although the forces generated are tiny, resonant effects allow THz waves to unzip double-stranded DNA, creating bubbles in the double strand that could significantly interfere with processes such as gene expression and DNA replication. That’s a jaw dropping conclusion.
And it also explains why the evidence has been so hard to garner. Ordinary resonant effects are not powerful enough to do do this kind of damage but nonlinear resonances can. These nonlinear instabilities are much less likely to form which explains why the character of THz genotoxic effects are probabilistic rather than deterministic, say the team.

  3. Selabach is going to get more Orwellian if people don’t start to wake up in ubber numbers
coz here the sheeps want this falsehood of security so now there are talking to have body scanners on the police force ,buildings….also “they” want to put it as an app for the phone
also there are talking to get scanners for your brain to see if you are having bad thoughts
what a World we living and is going to get worst remember the film Brazil hope we wake up before remember Soilent Green

    • thought police!!..its like 1984 isnt it

    • I completly agree with your position and see the same possibility of a global 1984-like totalitarian police state. I also think there are as many “sheeples” in europe like there are in australia or the US. but the simple branding of nudescanner instead of bodyscanner changed the debate in germany significantly so that the project was buried 2008 (until this christmas):

      http://www.theage.com.au/travel/travel-news/germany-labels-nude-scanner-plans-nonsense-20081113-5y7x.html

So there is a (last?) chance for protest, opposition and change (not the kind obama stands for) if people become better connected and organized, at best globally:

-Two years ago I had no clue about nwo and this thing although I was a critic of an authoritarian state. But especially the whole 9/11 truth movement grew so strong because of the internet that it can be heard all over the world and it is globally expanding.

-The idea of a dozen people from sweden to build a internet affialiated and surveillance critical party three years ago has become an global movement within months.

-The occupation of an university in vienna last october expanded within weeks to an nearly europewide protest against education reforms including a live internet broadcasted protest at the US embassy in austria against UC Berkeley police violence organized within a day.

-The iranelection tweets, youtube videos and facebook updates had a encouraging effect for chinese protest movements against their authoritarian regime (#cn4iran)

-the photos I posted earlier aren’t 12 hours old and are available in a colombian newspapers already: http://www.elespectador.com/imagen-protesta-escaneres

All these events happened within a 20 months or so and most notably through the connection and organization of ordinary and surprisingly creative webcitizens like you and me. The web 2.0 is therefore a severe challenge for the global fascists in contrast to the old internet.

I have the feeling that something big is brewing: there is without doubts a global nefarious agenda, but there is for the first time the chance of global resistance. if you have enough twitter followers or blog visitors you can arrange a fleshmob at your local airports too! I mean seeker alone had over 300k readers within a year! We are participants of a global movement we may not fully be aware of….

And “they” know it. that’s the reason why they try to censor the internet. I hope it is to late for them…….

      • excellent post mate and well said..web 2.0 is US right here right now..the internet force they didnt expect to happen..they will try to stop the net with filters but beside that they have no choice but to make rules and laws..or crash the entire system worldwide..and that wont happen!..i think

amazing how quick pics can get around the world now isnt it! :)

    • P.S.

I saw Brazil just a few weeks ago and enjoyed it, but never heard of soilent green. It sounds interesting…..!

  6. I refuse to allow three-dimensional electromagnetic images of me to be used for the sexual gratification of pervert airport security staff. If these filthy swines want to sit around all day leering at pornographic images of fat holidaymakers then they can do it at home, on their own time, like the rest of us. Join my campaign to ban these government-sanctioned wank-tanks.

sorry Seek to post it here again

  10. Yep. I’d be mad too if those pictures were not fake. Take 30 seconds and you will find out that they are readily available stock images of a nude model. they were inverted and had some weapons added in Photoshop.

I don’t like how intrusive the scanners are but disinformation is disinformation.

    • yes we know that..i even know the guy who did it..its an example of what can be done..no disinformation..this is how they can look

  11. [...] to be naked in front of another.. i am giving some links of body scans below.. its disgusting. Full body scanners at US airports..who wins? Follow The Money Full Body Airport Scanners JesseOKurtz.com Full-body scanner cannot replace diplomacy but [...]

  12. FAKE PHOTOSHOPPED BULLSHIT .. GET A LIFE LOOSERS

    • learn to spell moron..whats a “looser” LOL

go and stand in front of a scanner..you will be nude..enjoy

  13. The image used in this story is a fake. It is not a full body scan image. It is a picture of a naked woman that has been inverted using photoshop. When you invert it back you can see the original picture. Real images from full body scanners do not look like that when inverted. This picture was created and used to falsely portray the machine as a porn creating device.

    • yes i am aware of what it is..but many many more pictures of scanners show basically full nudes..i dont agree with scanners..thats just me..

      • The world’s largest association of pilots has announced a boycott of full body scanners at airports, citing health risks.

The stance is taken following the suspension of an American pilot for refusing to be scanned, and the emergence of news that scanners may deliver 20 times more radiation than was announced by the authorities who introduced them.
