Caltech cosmologist suicides

California Institute of Technology physicist Andrew E. Lange, co-leader of an international team that produced a detailed image of remnants of the Big Bang showing the universe is flat, has died in an apparent suicide, police said Tuesday. He was 52.

Caltech President Jean-Lou Chameau notified the institution in an e-mail that Lange apparently took his own life on Friday.

Lange checked into a hotel Thursday and the next morning housekeepers found him dead, apparently due to asphyxiation, said Detective Lt. John Dewar of the Pasadena police department.

“It appears to be a suicide,” Dewar said.

Lange recently resigned as chairman of the Division of Physics, Mathematics and Astronomy, Caltech said.

Lange was best known as co-leader of project “Boomerang,” which in 1998 used a telescope, carried over Antarctica by a balloon for 10 1/2 days, to study the so-called cosmic microwave background – a gas of thermal radiation left over from the embryonic universe.

The experiment showed the spatial geometry of the universe is flat and supported theories that it will expand forever and not collapse upon itself.

The observations were considered the first detailed images of the infant universe, according to Caltech. They largely matched predictions and suggested that scientists are on the right track in understanding the earliest moments of the universe, its age and the amount of so-called dark matter that holds galaxies together.

“It is an incredible triumph of modern cosmology to have predicted their basic form so accurately,” Lange said when the research was published in 2000.

A flat universe also supports the “inflation” theory that the universe underwent a rapid expansion in a fraction of a nanosecond after its birth.

Lange and Italian team leader, Paolo De Bernardis of Rome’s La Sapienza university, were awarded one of Italy’s 2006 Balzan prizes, annual awards of 1 million Swiss francs, for contributions to cosmology. (Boomerang was short for Balloon Observations of Millimetric Extragalactic Radiation and Geophysics.)

Lange was born July 23, 1957, in Urbana, Ill. He graduated from Princeton University in 1980, received a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1987, and was a visiting associate at Caltech in 1993-94. He was appointed a full professor in 1994 and was named the Marvin L. Goldberger Professor of Physics in 2001.

In 2006, he became a senior research scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and was appointed chairman of Caltech’s physics, mathematics and astronomy division in 2008.

Lange had three young sons, according to Caltech. A complete list of survivors was not immediately available.

Caltech, which had two student suicides in the first half of 2009, noted in its announcement of Lange’s death that counseling services are available to students and other members of the campus.

  1. seek great point
“a nother ones bites the dust..incredible how many just decide to kill themselves..what are they finding that is so worrying to them..or to people above them?”
one of my theories is at little large but on resume some scientist
there findings debunk god and how “they” can come with “they” god if this findings come to light.

  2. Seek rigth now everything we can think ( imho wisdom more than knowledge) can be possible
i’m trying to find at common denominator on YOUR 3 post about Europe economy one omre time i need to look at “they” acronym
    http://www.danpink.com/archives/2009/12/acronym-of-the-day-piigs
and that open at new window to explorer
so back to this post the same that imho the scientist dead theory
the economies resume theory imho “they” need to fold economy the wealth for at nwo to born and that is why i see for at while and is scary one

    • the link is..first the ecb says what happens when a country is kicked out of the EU..then a week later we get the no bail outs for EU countries from germany..are they setting up a default now?

  4. thx Seek but Wilderness point about Europe make a lot of sense to me is logical but (always is at but)
is always”they” surprise like Argentine(2002) or Iceland or more worry at new one that we don’t expect let’s pray that Wilderness
is right and logic wins non sense so maybe we can start changing for real
i finish with this joke maybe YOU guys know it anyway
    here go
“let me keep my money my Country , my guns (personally i don’t like guns but if the individual want it i totally approve it )
    back to the joke
“let me keep my money my Country and my guns and Mr.president you can keep the change”

    • the thing about what I was saying in Europe though is about consolidation of power in the long run. let europe build back up to dump the dollar and the power shifts back to europe enough for the EU and Vatican to gain more power with a thriving economy to prey upon. it’s speculative and i would only take these speculations about europe that I’m having with a grain of salt. and a growth in economy for central gov’ts does equate a growth in power of such gov’ts in such highly centralized gov’ts.

      • i think usa got wacked first time..and now it will be europes turn

      • i guess it depends on how much any intervention from the gov’ts happens. in the long run, i agree with you on this. if they let malinvestments purge and allow consolidation of power to happen in one fell swoop, then in the long run europe is going to be smack. in the short run, i’m not sure. again, i’m speculating, so, i’m not certain. but i definitely agree with you, i’m not sure when that will happen though

    • change you can believe in!
