Chilean Earthquake

The death toll is slowly rising as information trickles out of Chile after a huge 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck late yesterday, flattening buildings and triggering a tsunami that is menacing the Pacific rim.

The death toll stands at 214, but seems certain to rise.

The earthquake is estimated to have unleashed 500 times the energy of the Haiti earthquake and is one of the most powerful on record.

It struck in the middle of the night, with the epicentre more than 300 kilometres south-west of Santiago.

Almost all countries in the Pacific, including Australia, have been issued a tsunami warning, with New Zealand, Tonga, Samoa, Hawaii and as far as Russia and Japan on alert.

In Chile’s capital of Santiago older buildings cracked and crumbled, with the National Museum of Fine Arts one of the worst affected.

Briton Charlotte Mountford was caught on the 14th floor of her apartment building.

“We leapt out of bed; we didn’t know what to do. The tremors were getting worse and worse. And cupboards were crashing down around us and we could hear glass smashing,” she said.

“We couldn’t really walk so our first reaction was to jump in a bathtub, which we did while the tremors got progressively worse and we cowered there. It felt like forever but it was probably just a minute.”

Santiago airport is closed, public transport is shut down, and there are reports that some hospitals have been evacuated.

Further south there are fires in the city of Concepcion where communication is down and roads and bridges have been fractured and broken.

With multiple aftershocks across the region, some measuring well over 6 in magnitude, the Chilean President has declared a state of catastrophe.

The earthquake shook buildings in Argentina and was felt as far away as Sao Paulo in Brazil.

Survivors of the quake in Santiago described their ordeal.

“It was horrible. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone because it brings you to despair. To be all by yourself on the floor of a building. It’s horrible,” one resident said.

“It was horrific – the only thing I wanted was for it to stop [because] it looked like it would never stop.”

  2. Sec of Defense says: Yes We Can Cause Earthquakes
    Quote

“A: … There are some reports, for example, that some countries have been trying to construct something like an Ebola Virus, and that would be a very dangerous phenomenon, to say the least. Alvin Toeffler has written about this in terms of some scientists in their laboratories trying to devise certain types of pathogens that would be ethnic specific so that they could just eliminate certain ethnic groups and races; and others are designing some sort of engineering, some sort of insects that can destroy specific crops. Others are engaging even in an eco- type of terrorism whereby they can alter the climate, set off earthquakes, volcanoes remotely through the use of electromagnetic waves.”

  4. Chilean Quake Likely Shifted Earth’s Axis, NASA Scientist Says
    http://www.businessweek.com/news/2010-03-01/chilean-quake-likely-shifted-earth-s-axis-nasa-scientist-says.html

    • wow!!

The earthquake that killed more than 700 people in Chile on Feb. 27 probably shifted the Earth’s axis and shortened the day, a National Aeronautics and Space Administration scientist said.

Earthquakes can involve shifting hundreds of kilometers of rock by several meters, changing the distribution of mass on the planet. This affects the Earth’s rotation, said Richard Gross, a geophysicist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, who uses a computer model to calculate the effects.

“The length of the day should have gotten shorter by 1.26 microseconds (millionths of a second),” Gross, said today in an e-mailed reply to questions. “The axis about which the Earth’s mass is balanced should have moved by 2.7 milliarcseconds (about 8 centimeters or 3 inches).”
