“Black Widows” blamed for Russian bomb attacks
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/30/world/europe/30blackwidows.html
The two powerful explosions that tore through Moscow’s subway Monday revived a peculiar fear in the Russian capital, one that goes beyond the usual terrorism worries of a metropolis: the female bomber.
On Monday, the Russian authorities said the bombings had been carried out by two women, and that they were searching for two suspected female accomplices, the Russian news media reported. Few details of the bombers were released.
Earlier this decade, Moscow’s fear of female suicide bombers was so strong it became a lurid obsession. Women, sometimes casually adorned in jeans and blending in to the swirl of Moscow, committed at least 16 bombings, including two on board planes.
The attacks came early — as when a widow killed herself and the Russian commander who had killed her husband in one of the first such attacks in the Chechen war — and sometimes in the most unlikely places, like mingling in line at a music festival, which only multiplied the horror. They joined in some of the most celebrated terrorist attacks in recent Russian history, at a theater in Moscow and a school in Beslan, Russia.
The women, who came to be called the Black Widows, were not the first women to die this way. That dubious honor goes to a 16 year old Palestinian girl, who drove a truck into an Israeli army convoy in 1985. The Indian prime minister, Rajiv Gandhi, was killed in 1991 by a member of the Birds of Paradise, a female group associated with the Tamil Tigers of Sri Lanka.
Suicide bombing was a tactic that came late to Chechnya and was nearly unknown during the first war from 1994 to 1996. But once it arrived, in 2000, in an attack that killed 27 Russian special forces soldiers, it quickly became associated with women.
The tactic expanded in subsequent years. Females adorned in billowy black robes and strapped with explosives made up 19 of the 41 captors in the October, 2002 hostage taking in the Moscow theater, which ended when Russian special services released a sleep-inducing gas into the building.
When soldiers entered the auditorium they reportedly walked among into slumped forms and as a first precaution shot dead the Black Widows where they lay, lest they wake up and explode.
In 2004, female suicide bombers detonated bombs on internal flights; one bomber identified by the Russian authorities was divorced in her early 40s, the other two sisters in their 20s who had also divorced.
While there is no single reason women decide to give up their lives, experts say they have usually suffered a traumatic event that makes them burn with revenge or question whether they want to live. This can be the death of a child, husband or other family member at the hands of Russian forces or a rape. Russian authorities have said the women are sometimes drugged.
In 2003, Russian police captured 22-year-old Chechen woman, Zarema M. Muzhakhoyeva, after she left a handbag bomb in a Moscow café. She was not a religious fanatic, her lawyer, Natalya V. Yevlapova, said in a telephone interview, but she had become emotionally distressed after her husband was murdered in what appeared to be a business dispute. “These girls are just pushed into a corner,” Ms. Yevlapova said.
In recent weeks, the Russian military conducted a series of raids that killed a prominent and charismatic recruiter for the rebels, a man who went by the name Said Buryatsky, along with dozens of other fighters. That had prompted a warning from a prominent rebel leader, who may or may not have made good his threat on Monday.

i dont know who did this..i do find it surprising that they know it was black widows already..and who is going to get the revenge hit?..chechens i would suggest..but maybe they will ”find” other fingerprints..

ny times = agenda
smart Seek Turkey?
maybe maybe..could thwart their EU entry perhaps?
Look guys. with all of his allegedly “glorious” past, the way Stalin had pushed Chechens (and some of the other Islamic fragments of the people of the Union Soviets of the Socialisti Republics) to different locations of the state, etc. and, other cultural differences, their response is simply natural. It is not a matter of good or bad. It just is. Moslems suffered in Russia and so do they in India… and when it becomes a fashion, people do these kind of evil things. But it was evil that brought evil.
On the other hand though, people have argued that generally Chechens wanted to manipulate Russian Oils to, well, some said for its wealth (and technically if you live on top of it you deserve it or not?) but others exaggerated to the point of saying they wanted to become the gold center for the whole Islamic terrorism.
i doubt that. Look. from Russia to…. Iran to… many other countries sometimes industrial workers don’t get paid for months and years. When there is scarcity, you wouldn’t want to fight your family… so let’s fight the neighbor… or the guy acroos the street whose hair is black or nose is big…. or the ones with …..
In and of it all, religion makes a set of ceremonial and cultural attitude and, when you suppress them, they’ll pop out.
pretty good synopsis behrooz and thanks..i dont disagree with claims by groups that have been ostracised by russia..my query is with who actually did it..and what will be the retaliation?..because in the west we call things like that a false flag event..this may not be..but it also could be
Think it was a very rare event. An actual terrorist attack. Doesnt mean they didnt know it was going to happen.;)
#1 rule in bar fighting is to let them swing first. Even if they miss, you have reason to whip their ass.
good analogy mate
i guess so far Behrooz is wright the Chechens rebels are telling the main press that are the ones to do it
http://www1.voanews.com/english/news/europe/Chechen-Militant-Claims-Responsibility-for-Moscow-Bombings-89617292.html
or maybe not?
I myself am a socialist but, the way Behrooz N talks… if Putin hadn’t bomb them all in their cities, they could have become an advanced and nice sort of Islamic state, unlike say other middle eastern ones
the essence of islam..the top tier of devotion is jihad..a fundamentalist muslim doesnt want to be advanced..they are happy living in the 3rd or 4th century
“the essence of Islam..the top tier of devotion is jihad”
It is easy to say that but then, what should i say about goodness or badness of an orthodox Jewish fellow (If not in NY City back in some parts of Israel i bet) on Saturday in relations with electricity, traffic light and what have you or,…
If we seek into history, what was done on the name of Christianity for example? in my imagination, probably my historic friend … the guy called Jesus was technically having teardrops in red color hung on the cross for what misdeeds have been done in his name. You recall what Francisco Pizarro had done telling this whole nation to fill their mouths with coca leaves and work like hard working donkeys to fill up this palace with gold and then their “Inca” would be considered Christian enough to be saved… and then boom, his head cut or…
And the real story of “Thanksgiving”..
that was much more recent and, by the way, any way Amish attitude of living is environmentally much better than the rest of us… so living in 3rd or 4th century wouldn’t be that bad!
Every religion (and other ideologies, including variances from communism up to…democracy….fascism) have their variances and that is as complex and at the same time systematic as… Fractal Geometry laws or say, DNA pattern.
I used to care a lot (and technically still do supposedly) about White Bears… the ones in the poles. In Animal Planet they showed that occasionally when there is scarcity of food (not necessarily always though i gather) after mating, the daddy follows up the cabs and whichever did not runaway and walk away with mama daddy eats its own baby. Why? Conditions made it so. Or there was a time that, some north pole people, considering the coldness of traveling they would grant their spouse/daughter to passing fellow or visitor.
Once again let’s see where they were standing: In crossing point of 2 and a half large continents, where from Silk Road to god knows other merchant paths different things were exchanged correct? But these were people in the middle of desert without rational agriculture of their own at lots of their whereabouts.
What i am pointing out hereby is partially based on the facts exposed by for example a book called 23 Years (of Mohammad the prophet) written by an ex clergy of a sort that, – its facts are correct in regard to Holy Quran’s listing order –
there is this guy who acts as bookkeeper for this businesswoman who knows how to trade things. So they meet what is Iran today up to ……parts of Africa and somewhere in Europe. So he picks up bits of this religion, that religion and, since Zoroaster had a book too so let’s mix it up with Judo Christianity as the “Book Holders” (now is not the best time to relate for example Saul known as Paul’s bible and, what Holy Bible would be without him!) and, since learning poetry techniques in then Persia, due to its importance as being one of the most efficient tools of those days to show ones artistic and holy value, at the age forty Mohammad begins his poetry.
Then what? He tries for X many years in Mecca and, acts like a sandy Jesus to get some supporters and of course, unite HIS NATION and of course, have as many wives as any man desires by nature and, it does not work out well. Why? why don’t you other worship my idea of god instead of that piece of stone?
this part is not correct in that book though that the word Allah is originated from the language of Jesus time Aramian that means source of existence, being, light, etc. and nowadays anti Islams claim it was name of another piece of stone…
so he same come take me seriously.
He didn’t get enough vote!!! he did not find enough supporters, migrated to Medina (This voyage is registered as beginning of Islamic Calendar) and during these transportation, transformations, like other sandy hooligans do some plundering and “liberating” properties from other caravans and…
From that period onward they figured out that with fighting and sleeping with their daughter/wives after cutting their heads and consuming/cashing out their properties, our religion gets more glorious. Yes. This is the way! This is Jihad…
But for a second, get away from Humanity. Look at all other entities living in deserts…
Are the Cactus and other plants as fresh looking and wet and fruity as the ones you see in good agriculture?
look at the other animal’s living ways. They have strange metabolisms. Compare a camel with its cousin, Llama. Somebody wrote some words some thousands years of ago whose legitimacy is as …. I’ll leave the other religions alone.
I won’t get into Jungian understanding to for example conclude before agricultural revolution, like Spartans or, like the monkey that kills or eats one of its kids that wasn’t big enough to keep the milk good for the rest, the people somewhere used to do the same to their kids (or kids from other wives) and when agricultural times came around and there was food enough to feed more, God told Ibrahim to not to kill his other son…
All these religions say what they say. God, laws of universe, chaos theory, too complex things to be define simply and, if things are not measurable or experimented, they can be nonsense. The point about Mohammad’s life is that, since all of a sudden, half of the verses, i.e. all of the poetry made in Mecca were nice and kindness (and idealistic promises when you worship Allah) and then, all of the post journey to Medina said Jihad, Jihad. What can we do about that!
Fourth Islamic pope, xcuse me Khalife, Osman as far as i recall, collected all of the manuscripts and Quranic related sheets and, mixed them up. Therefore, they are not always one angry one after another angry one….. and they are out of calendar order.
But has anybody read the book of Dreyfus (not the one who was alleged spy) about roots of Islamic fundamentalism?
It is the work of, mostly at least, British and American agents who did not want Nationalism and Socialism grow too much somewhere there was oil. Result? opening the Pandora box.
But putting all this aside, if a protestant, an Orange Order kills this other guy’s wife/husband, should s/he not get extremely agitated and hopeless?
Give them some … i don’t know speed or whatever drug and they’ll fly to heaven for your cause.
thats a long reply but a good read..yes other religions are also stuck in time warps. .great points
For broadening readers’ horizons.
We can have chats, laugh and talk politics having beers and then feeling good since i was free to say it.
But when i go as a guest, try to serve by presenting – as far as my limited mind can do – the real factors, so i, u, others don’t get shot for nothing and, readers try to use their strength on focusing solutions for social problems in more civil, humane manner and well, humanity’s welfare one way or another caring and not caring comes back to you.
Hope did not bore u and, anybody, saw my mistake, note it out. if not, use it and then seen what next happens in your arenas. I cannot solve global warming but, let’s make life bearable.
tx behrooz..i wasnt bored..have a great day
I do not like link that i have since Washington Post Wires (one of my general sources) does not keep things intact.

Hometown of Russian suicide bomber rattled
By ARSEN MOLLAYEV

KOSTEK, Russia — When a 16-year-old girl married a militant Islamist separatist entangled in a long-running and bloody struggle against Russian government forces, her relatives in this dusty North Caucasus village say they disowned her immediately.
They knew they could face torture from Russian security forces or even death for associating with the militants, and they knew their Dzhanet Abdurakhmanova, still just a schoolgirl, could easily be killed.
But they never expected her to be dispatched to Moscow as a suicide bomber to blow herself up on a subway train.
Abdurakhmanova, whose husband was killed by government forces in December, and another young widow have been accused of carrying out Monday’s twin suicide bombings, which killed 40 people and injured 90. They were the first suicide attacks in the capital since 2004.
Both women were from the North Caucasus, a patchwork of predominantly Muslim provinces and home to a fierce Islamic insurgency that has been fueled by frequent killings, kidnappings and torture of residents by government forces.
Chechen rebel leader Doku Umarov claimed responsibility for the subway attacks, saying they were retaliation for the deaths of four garlic-picking villagers who were slain on Feb. 11.
In Kostek, a poor rural village in the province of Dagestan where Abdurakhmanova grew up, a piercing silence hangs in the air. Men on the main square stare transfixed at newcomers, then turn away whispering. The village feels dangerous even for those who live in the provincial capital, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) away.
Abdurakhmanova’s suicide attack has brought unwanted attention.
“We turned our back on her when she married that one about two years ago,” said a 20-year-old man, Abdurakhmanova’s cousin, who refused to give his name for fear of reprisals.
“We didn’t have anything to do with Dzhanet and we never wanted to” after her marriage, he said before disappearing into their grandmother’s single-story brick home, one of the nicest in the village.
On Friday, a leading Russian newspaper published a photo of the doe-eyed teenager, partly veiled, in the embrace of a bearded man – both grasping handguns.
The report said Abdurakhmanova met her husband, Umalat Magomedov, in an Internet chat and that he then set up a meeting and drove her away by force when she was still 16.
After her husband’s death, Abdurakhmanova may have fallen under the influence of Islamists, who try to persuade widows and other relatives to sacrifice their lives to avenge their slain husbands, sons and brothers.
The daily Moskovsky Komsomolets said a burned shred of a letter in Arabic found on Abdurakhmanova’s body promised a “meeting in heaven.” It was unclear who wrote the letter.
Her fellow suicide bomber was believed to be 20-year-old Markha Ustarkhanova from Chechnya, the newspaper said.
The militants, who once fought for Chechnya’s independence, are now seeking to create an Islamic state across the North Caucasus. In Dagestan, they carry out attacks almost daily.
On Saturday, three militants opened fire on police in a drive-by shooting, killing one and injuring another. Two other suicide bombers struck Wednesday near Dagestan’s border with Chechnya, killing 12 people. Another explosion there Thursday killed two suspected militants.
Umarov, the rebel leader, said the Moscow bombings were retribution for the deaths of four villagers, “some of the poorest people” in the impoverished region.
“These people were mercilessly destroyed,” he said in a video message posted Wednesday.
The four garlic pickers died along with 18 suspected Islamic militants in a three-day shootout in the mountainous forests that straddle the North Caucasus provinces of Ingushetia and Chechnya.
The Memorial rights group on Saturday said the four villagers were caught in the crossfire and then dragged away and executed while gathering the wild garlic shoots to sell at local markets. Memorial said pictures taken on a mobile phone camera showed one of the victims, Shamil Katayev, lying dead in the snow, a trail of dried blood running from his nose to the back of his head.
“That shooting was just lunacy,” said Alexander Cherkasov, a Memorial spokesman. “And that lunacy was used to justify terrorism.”
President Dmitry Medvedev urged even harsher measures Friday to crack down on terrorism, including targeting people who even help the militants by feeding them or doing simple chores, such as washing their clothes.
However, Russian police and security forces have long been accused of seizing people suspected of aiding militants. Some people have been tortured and many have disappeared. Rights activists trying to document the abuses also have been killed, kidnapped or threatened.

thx for the update..something doesnt sound right to me..just cant put my finger on it
Hi, good morning and,… happy agnostic Easter!!! (God bless the Pornthief’s church (sic)
something you couldn’t dig on:
I do not like link that i have since Washington Post Wires (one of my general sources) does not keep things intact.
Thus… read their life story. i wish i could understand what 401 stands for . . .
i meant:
Washington Press Wires in foreign section is my resource often. They say what AP or Reuters has released and that’s it unedited but, you won’t find it where it was tomorrow that is, x numbers of papers and … will edit it and print it in their own newspapers/radio but, Washington Post link for that article doesn’t last long and, next day you don’t find it.
i wish i could understand what 401 stands for . . .
i haven’t read a single part of your site despite this one…
401… to my illiterate mind means like everybody having some sort of … retirement or health insurance? so they won’t die of hunger IF they had a job at all profitable in the US at some point.
Right now, Japan that good nutrition makes them life longer and, where job is or, was granted to one’s son with full privileges has gone sour and, number of retired living fellows is more than working ones plus, their wives get p—– off since now that he is retired, he still expects her to bring the meal and treat him like the king. well dear queen, at some point if he did not fight like a capitalist mini swine, we would not be here either, could you gently teach him to wash dishes and…. be a working company and don’t hate him for being dumb?
the rest is the text of those two woman bombers who went somewhere up there to have a date with their good old husband.
Live long and … funky pal!
401 is exacty what you said..i am seeking the resting spots for the usa ppl’s 401′s..because they are gone..its only a matter of where and who to..hope that helps
This is not a situation I’m particularly familiar with, but I think that it’s important to note some of the history of the Chechen Wars and how this plays out with the present Russian media and the state.
It’s interesting, as Naomi Klein notes in “The Shock Doctrine” that the campaign against Chechnya began in 1994, when Boris Yeltsin’s popularity was at its lowest point yet. He had fallen to the single digits, and it is very possible that the war was started in order to foster sentiments of patriotism and unity with his government, similar to what the Argentine military dictatorship did in the Falklands’ War. Unfortunately for Yeltsin, the campaign didn’t work out as well as he had planned and he was unable to defeat the Chechen resistance, but that’s another story. What’s important, in the context of this article, was that the Russian state had found its “Other”, its scapegoat. When the people are afraid, they will seek cover under the most powerful force antagonistic to the object of fear, namely, the state.
What makes this fear even more pronounced is that the ‘enemy’ is not easily recognizable. Chechens become terrorists, terrorists become ghosts, and ghost can be anywhere. This slippery slope of logic legitimizes the intervention of the state into spheres of life that it would normally not be welcome in, and provides cover for economic restructuring as well, as, like I mentioned earlier, it deflects anger against the state toward a foreign entity. The fact that the Black Widows are women only makes it easier for the Russian state to feed the frenzy, as there is now an extra 50% of the population that is a potential terrorist.
great summary selucha..this bit: “What’s important, in the context of this article, was that the Russian state had found its “Other”, its scapegoat. When the people are afraid, they will seek cover under the most powerful force antagonistic to the object of fear, namely, the state.” nailed it mate..
“The fact that the Black Widows are women only makes it easier for the Russian state to feed the frenzy, ” indeed..nice point on argentina as well
