BREAKING NEWS: North Korea “sunk South Korean warship”
SOUTH Korea’s military believes a torpedo fired from a North Korean submarine sank its navy ship last month, killing 46 sailors.
The assessment of the sinking of the 1200-tonne Cheonan was based on intelligence gathered jointly with the US.
The South Korean military’s intelligence arm sent the report of “certain” North Korean involvement to the Presidential Blue House soon after the incident, Yonhap News quoted a high-ranking military source as saying.
“North Korean submarines are all armed with heavy torpedoes with 441 pound (200kg) warheads,” the source reportedly said.
“It is the military intelligence’s assessment that the North attacked with a heavy torpedo.”
South Korea plans to raise the front half of the Cheonan, which went down on March 26 near a disputed sea border with North Korea, killing the sailors.
It is expected to issue a verdict on the cause of the disaster after this.
The reclusive North has denied it had anything to do with the sinking.
