Green groups seek end to oil drilling in Australia

A coalition of environment groups wants Australia to learn the lesson from the disastrous US oil spill and place a moratorium on new drilling.

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, which has been leaking for two months and has caused significant environmental damage, prompted US president Barack Obama to place a moratorium on new deepwater drilling.

An alliance of 32 environment groups wants Australia to follow suit.

The group says that since Australia’s Montara oil spill in August, in the Timor Sea, the federal government has released 31 new oil and gas leases in sensitive marine areas.

Don Henry, chief executive of the Australian Conservation Foundation, said marine areas needed more protection.

“Everyone knows prevention is better than cure,” he said in a statement.

The group, which includes Friends of the Earth and WWF, wants a moratorium on new oil and gas approvals until safety issues around deepwater drills have been resolved. They also want a national network of new marine sanctuaries.

A report on the Montara spill has been handed to the federal government but has not been made public. The spill lasted more than two months.
