A huge tract of land in the Tanami and Great Sandy deserts is about to become Australia’s largest indigenous protected area (IPA).

Federal Indigenous Health Minister Warren Snowdon is due to announce the move at a ceremony at the remote spot of Sangsters Bore in the Tanami desert in central Australia at 2pm (CST) on Tuesday.

About 300 traditional owners are expected to witness the declaration turning 101,500 square kilometres of land – larger than Tasmania and just slightly smaller than England – into an IPA.

Becoming an IPA gives greater recognition to the role Aboriginal people play in caring for their country, and will see them get more federal funding to support rangers and indigenous land management.

Becoming an IPA gives greater recognition to the role Aboriginal people play in caring for their country, and will see them get more federal funding to support rangers and indigenous land management.

It also means Aboriginal people’s skills in caring for plants, animals and cultural sites will be more fully utilised.

The region to be made into an IPA is already Aboriginal freehold land, giving the indigenous people certain rights over things like mining and where roads can be built.

The area of land is larger than Tasmania, at 68,000 sq km, and just slightly smaller than England, which is 130,000 sq km.

Sand dunes, salt pans, spinifex tussocks and flowering shrubs are included in the area, according to details provided by Parks Australia.

The indigenous communities of Yuendumu, Nyirripi and Willowra are expected to be among the main beneficiaries of the announcement.

  1. Not exactly prime land. What about some of the coastal land they lay claim to? I wonder if any of it caught the Maralinga bomb drifts?

  2. We have seen it before. The owners of the international mining corporations order their puppets(the politicians) to “give” the land to the Aboriginals, then a few years later the miners will buy mining rights off the Aboriginals very cheap…and probably without having to pay taxes to the Australian government…

  3. there’s a county nearby where landowners dream of selling their land to native amerians, because they are able to operate casinos. in the very same county, a multimillionaire destroyed a sacred ritual place on a lake island, on which he intends to build a mansion. the indians there had been using that spot to worship for more then 6000 years.

that county is a mere microcosm compared to what is happening with the abuse of all kinds of indigenous cultures. maurice strong and his gang of thugs is setting up an eco-gaia-indeigenous-peace-and-love(forthosethatsurvive) area in colorado.

as al is talking about above, when indigenous people can be exploited, they will be – even in the guise of “giving” them land.
