Now in its 11th year, Wikipedia is one of the most popular sites on the internet and has revolutionised the way humans across the world access information.

The system of sites holds 22 million articles in 282 languages. Individual language Wikipedias range in size from four million articles for English down to Fijian, Chamorro, Akan, Xhosa and others with fewer than 150.

The pages are written and maintained by a force of 85,000 volunteers across the world, and hundreds of the most die-hard Wikipedians gathered in Washington DC this week for the annual Wikimania conference.

So just who are the people who keep the site up and running, making sure internet users across the world have some place to settle bar bets, research final papers, or pass the time when bored at work?

  1. Anyone that has any knowledge of writing should be able to easily pick up how lack luster Wikipedia articles are. Even when browsing subjects of things, rather than people, I always find myself wanting to edit the hell out of the article and put proper words, and things in there.

Most the problem with Wikipedia is it is such a distraction when it tries to be the genius figure of people. It’s easy to see in their descriptive write ups of films. Someone easily rushes through the plot of a movie but has no problem writing little detail on things they seemed to have liked, and forgetting to write the little details on other things.

But also, you wouldn’t be surprised if that’s how it’s taught in schools. Our education is pushing us backwards and not forwards. The numbers in other countries are just horror when thinking back to school and how you were too scared to go cause you were going to get the shit beat out of you, or teachers that call you retarded and want to put you in a special class.

    • or give you special pills..

i use wikipedia for the history of leaders and the like.. because i find thats usually accurate and historical..i wouldnt trust anything else on there
