The Arab League has recognised the newly formed Syrian opposition bloc as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people.

Arab foreign ministers meeting in Cairo, Egypt, issued a statement late on Monday describing the new National Coalition of the Syrian Powers of Revolution and Opposition as “the legitimate representative and main interlocutor with the Arab League”.

They called on “the rest of the opposition to join this national coalition so that it brings together all segments of the Syrian people”.

The Cairo talks came a day after opposition groups announced in Qatar the formation of a broad-based coalition against the government of Bashar al-Assad, Syria’s president.

They pledged to set up a transitional government after the new bloc gained international recognition.

The coalition has already drawn backing from Gulf Arab states and other regional and international powers.

France on Tuesday became the first European nation to back the coalition of Syrian opposition forces, following in the steps of the Arab League, which on Monday called the bloc the “legitimate representative” of the country. Opposition groups in Qatar announced on Sunday they had put aside their differences and created a broad-based coalition against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The coalition has pledged to set up a transitional government after gaining international recognition. Meanwhile,NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said late on Monday that the organization will defend alliance member Turkey if Syrian fighting spills over the border. Rasmussen also welcomed the new coalition.

France is the first of the European countries to fully recognize the Syrian opposition coalition as the “sole legitimate representative” of the Syrian people. Meanwhile the US calls it “a legitimate representative” but is yet to fully recognize it.

“I announce today that France recognizes the Syrian national coalition as the sole legitimate representative of the Syrian people and as the future government of a democratic Syria which will allow for an end to Bashar al-Assad’s regime,” President Hollande told a news conference in Paris.

On Sunday in Doha, Syrian opposition groups finally agreed to create a new leadership body united against President Bashar Assad. The coalition emerged after days of talks sponsored by foreign governments pushing for regime change in the embattled nation.

The US has also recognized the National Coalition of Forces of the Syrian Revolution and Opposition as “a legitimate representative” of the Syrian people but stopped short of describing it as the “sole” representative. Washington stressed that the nascent group must first demonstrate its ability to represent Syrians inside the country.

“We look forward to supporting the national coalition as it charts a course for the end of Assad’s bloody rule, and marks the start, we believe, of a peaceful, just and democratic future for the people of Syria,” US State Department spokesman Mark Toner said.

Hollande also said he would reconsider the question of arming the opposition.

President Obama welcomed the formation of an umbrella group for Syrian rebels fighting to topple the regime of Bashar al-Assad.

“We are constantly consulting with the opposition on how they can get organized so that they’re not splintered and divided in the face of the onslaught from the Assad regime,” he told a White House news conference.

“I’m encouraged to see that the Syrian opposition created an umbrella group that may have more cohesion than they’ve had in the past. We’re going to be talking to them,” he said.

“We consider them a legitimate representative of the aspirations of the Syrian people. We’re not yet prepared to recognize them as some sort of a government in exile but we do think it’s a broad-based representative group.”
