Hilary gets grilled on Benghazi..”Algerian terrorists got weapons from Libya”
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the Islamists who attacked a gas plant in Algeria got their weapons in Libya. She also blamed Northern Africa’s security vacuum on the Arab Spring while testifying on the September 2012 attack in Benghazi.
“There is no doubt that the Algerian terrorists had weapons from Libya. There is no doubt that the Malian remnants of AQIM [Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb] have weapons from Libya,” Clinton told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during a hearing on the 2012 attack on the US consulate in Benghazi.
Clinton said she was unable to weigh in on reports that some of the terrorists involved in the Algerian hostage crisis had played a part in the Benghazi attack.
SECRETARY of State Hillary Clinton, at times emotional and fierce, insisted her department is moving swiftly and aggressively to strengthen security at US missions worldwide after the deadly September 11 raid on the consulate in Libya.
In her last formal congressional testimony as America’s top diplomat – but perhaps not her last time on the political stage – Ms Clinton once again took full responsibility for the department’s missteps leading up to an assault at the US facility in Benghazi, Libya, that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.
Ms Clinton ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008 and is the subject of frequent speculation she will be a candidate in 2016.
Her testimony was focusing on the Libya attack after more than three months of Republican charges that the Obama administration ignored signs of a deteriorating security situation there and cast an act of terrorism as mere protests over an anti-Muslim video in the heat of a presidential election. Washington officials suspect that militants linked to al-Qa’ida carried out the attack.
Her voice cracking at one point, Ms Clinton said her experience was at times highly personal.
“I stood next to President Obama as the Marines carried those flag-draped caskets off the plane at Andrews. I put my arms around the mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, sons and daughters,” she told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee at a jam-packed hearing.
Her voice rising to Republicans’ challenges at another point, she defended the Obama administration and UN Ambassador Susan Rice, who was vilified for widely debunked claims five days after the attack that protests precipitated the raid rather than terrorism. She challenged the Republican focus on Ms Rice’s comments, which were based on intelligence talking points.
“The fact is we had four dead Americans. Was it because of a protest? Or was it because of guys out for a walk one night who decided they’d go kill some Americans? What difference, at this point, does it make?” a clearly exasperated and angry Ms Clinton told Senator Ron Johnson, a republican. “It is our job to figure out what happened and do everything we can to prevent it from ever happening again, senator.”
