Ron Paul calls US involvement in Mali “undeclared war”..Britain to send forces

Ron Paul said US assistance to the French intervention in Mali is a sign that the Obama administration is creeping into another war – especially since questions about the extent of US involvement remain largely unanswered.

The recently retired congressman outlined his fears in his weekly column, “Texas Straight Talk”. Paul said that while the US has only announced its transport and intelligence assistance to the French initiative, “this is clearly developing into another war”.

“President Obama last week began his second term by promising that ‘a decade of war is now ending,’” Paul wrote.“As he spoke, the US military was rapidly working its way into another war, this time in the impoverished African country of Mali.”

Paul believes that unanswered questions about possible US involvement on African soil further indicates that Obama has been more active in the conflict than he admits, and that Congress has been kept out of the loop.

“Media questions as to whether the US has Special Operations forces, drones, or CIA paramilitary units active in Mali are unanswered by the Administration,” Paul said. “Congress has asked few questions and demanded few answers from the president. As usual, it was not even consulted. But where does the president get the authority to become a co-combatant in French operations in Mali, even if US troops are not yet overtly involved in the attack?”

Earlier this month, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said that US assistance in Mali is a good example of future military assistance it might provide to its allies and that the US would not bring its own troops into the conflict. The US first became involved by airlifting French soldiers and equipment to Mali with its C-17 transport planes, but gradually expanded its roles in Africa.

Downing Street has said that the British government will dispatch 350 troops to Mali to aid French troops stationed in the country’s north, as part of a UK mission to train local forces and engage in “force protection.”

British representatives are attending a meeting in Brussels on Tuesday to discuss the provision of troops as part of an EU mission to the African country. The EU estimates that 500 supplementary troops will be sent to Mali, some 350 of which will be British. This will include approximately 40 military advisers who will train soldiers in Mali and 200 British soldiers to be sent to neighboring African countries.

An ECOWAS (Economic Community Of West African States) force of West African troops – about 7,500 of them – are also coming into Mali to take over some garrison duties, and steadily take over the fighting role from the French.

The budget for the campaign, which has been set at around $950m will be financed through an international donors’ conference based in Ethiopia.

British Prime Minister David Cameron told French President François Hollande on Sunday evening that the UK was keen to provide military assistance in Mali and West Africa, including the training of local forces.

  1. He’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing, Dr. Tarpley makes a good case about him during the elections. He was a distraction in certain key states to dilute the Romney vote. You never hear him talk about the 1% wall street tax.

    • granted he may have been at times..but hes totally correct on mali..dont throw the baby out with the bathwater :)

  2. He’s been totally correct on many topics. You should watch the Video of his final speech to the US Congress. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zqi6paX3ong. 50 minutes of pure analytical brilliance.

    • meh… i told everyone i know that if they still participate in the ridiculous death ritual that passes for an election in the US, that they should vote ron paul because he was the sole mainstream antiwar candidate.

but the fact is that he’s a member of the republican party and therefore guilty of mass murder and crimes against humanity, just like all the other members of both parties.

i now think his 2012 run was about keeping romney out of office and bolstering his son’s chances for 2016.

there is really no excuse for membership in the republican or democratic parties at this point. you’re either a sick, child-fucking murderer or you arent. you cant have it both ways.

americans themselves are just a bunch of violent, bloodthirsty morons (prove me wrong!) …. i wouldn’t expect them to do the right thing, ever.
