Vatican tied Mount Graham Observatory launches LUCIFER Telescope

Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) partners in the U.S, Germany and Italy announced April 21 that the first of two new innovative near-infrared cameras/spectrographs for the LBT is now available to astronomers for scientific observations at the telescope on Mount Graham in southeastern Arizona.

After more than a decade of design, manufacturing and testing, the new instrument – dubbed LUCIFER 1 – provides a powerful tool to gain spectacular insights into the universe – from the Milky Way to extremely distant galaxies. LUCIFER, built by a consortium of German institutes, will be followed by an identical twin instrument that will be delivered to the telescope in early 2011.

“With the large light-gathering power of the LBT, astronomers are now able to collect the spectral fingerprints of the faintest and most distant objects in the universe,” said LBT director Richard Green, a professor of astronomy at the University of Arizona’s Steward Observatory.

LUCIFER 1 and its twin are mounted at the focus points of the LBT’s two giant 8.4-meter (27.6 foot) diameter telescope mirrors. Each instrument is cooled to -213 degrees Celsius in order to observe in the near-infrared wavelength range. Near-infrared observations are essential for understanding the formation of stars and planets in our galaxy as well as revealing the secrets of the most distant and very young galaxies.

LUCIFER’s innovative design allows astronomers to observe in unprecedented detail, for example star forming regions, which are commonly hidden by dust clouds.

The instrument is remarkably flexible, combining a large field of view with a high resolution. It provides three exchangeable cameras for imaging and spectroscopy in different resolutions according to observational requirements.

Astronomers use spectroscopy to analyze incoming light and answer questions such as how stars and galaxies formed and what they are made of.

The instruments were built by a consortium of five German institutes led by the Center for Astronomy of Heidelberg University, together with the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg, the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Garching, the Astronomical Institute of the Ruhr-University in Bochum, and the University of Applied Sciences in Mannheim.

The LBT is a collaboration among the Italian astronomical community (National Institute of Astrophysics), the University of Arizona, Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, the LBT Beteiligungsgesellschaft in Germany (Max-Planck-Institut fϋr Astronomie in Heidelberg, Zentrum fur Astronomie der Universität Heidelberg, Astrophysikalisches Institut in Potsdam, Max-Planck-Institut fϋr Extraterrestrische Physik in Munich, and Max-Planck-Institut fϋr Radioastronomie in Bonn), and the Ohio State University and Research Corporation (Ohio State University, University of Notre Dame, University of Minnesota and University of Virginia).

Additional Technical Background:

  • LUCIFER is an acronym for: Large Binocular Telescope Near-infrared Utility with Camera and Integral Field Unit for Extragalactic Research
  • LUCIFER’s three exchangeable cameras are available for direct imaging, long-slit-spectroscopy and multi-object-spectroscopy. Two of them are optimized for seeing-limited conditions, a third camera for diffraction-limited cases will be used after completion of the LBT adaptive secondary mirror system.
  • Using a four Mega-pixel Hawaii2-camera the instrument covers a comparatively large field of view of 4×4 arc minutes (about 1/50th of the full moon on sky).
  • According to observational requirements, presently a set of five broad-band filters (z, J, H, K, Ks), 12 medium and narrow-band filters and three different high-resolution spectroscopic gratings are available.
  • A special feature of the LUCIFER is 10 fixed and up to 22 exchangeable masks which can be used for longslit and multi-object spectroscopy (MOS). This multiplex-technology developed at MPE allows the spectroscopy of about two dozen objects simultaneously and reduces the costs per photon and observing time at the telescope dramatically. All laser-cut MOS-masks are stored in a separate magazine which can be replaced with new masks at fully cryogenic temperatures using an external cryostat and a vacuum interlock to the main instrument. This work can be done within a few hours during a normal service-interval in day-time and avoids a several days lasting warming-up and cooling-down cycle of the complete LUCIFER-instrument preserving valuable observing time.

A new instrument with an evil-sounding name is helping scientists see how stars are born. Lucifer, which stands for (deep breath) “Large Binocular Telescope Near-infrared Utility with Camera and Integral Field Unit for Extragalactic Research,” is a chilled instrument attached to a telescope in Arizona. And yes, it’s named for the Devil, whose name itself means “morning star.” But it wasn’t meant to evoke him, according to a spokesman for the University of Arizona, where it is housed.

The instrument is chilled to -213 Celsius, about -351 F, to allow for near-infrared observations. That wavelength is important for understanding star and planet formation, as well as observing very distant and very young galaxies. Lucifer has three interchangeable cameras for imaging and spectroscopy in different resolutions. It has a large field of view and high-res capabilities, which allow a wide range of observations.

Lucifer is part of the Large Binocular Telescope, which happens to be right next to the Vatican Observatory on Mt. Graham in Tucson. That’s right, the Vatican has an observatory in Arizona, manned by Jesuit astronomers. Now its next-door neighbor is named for the Devil.

sometimes the truth is stranger than couldnt make this stuff up..the vatican is involved with a telescope called lucifer..strange days we live in eh?

  7. Catholics all over the world are outraged by this and have launched a petition against these rascals

    Dear Bishop Olmstead:

This following practical joke in a serious publication is NOT funny, naming a telescope after Lucifer, whatever the rough acronym. It is offensive to Catholics and it plays into the hands and prejudices of Protestant Fundamentalists in a time of rampant scandal already (Google and see). Catholics reject this cavalier irresponsibility and we have contacted both the Vatican about it. The Jesuits have been opposing Rome for too long and this display of nastiness will not stand. We ask you to change the name and ensure that those responsible apologize the Holy Father and to us all, else many of us will go public, some taking out ADS in prominent publications if necessary.

  8. Don’t blame the bishop or the Jesuits. The facts are that the Catholic Church has nothing to do with this Telescope and they only share some real estate on this high mountain observatory. The Vatican telescope was there for years before this Telescope was designed and built. BTW, the Vatican has no interest in the Telescope financially or otherwise.

    • are you trying to say that 2 seperate groups share the same mountain but have nothing to do with each other? even though they both have telescopes..why does the vatican need a telescope?

  9. Since the 1700’s the Church has been very interested in the connection and relationship between science and faith. In the 1890’s pope Leo commissioned a telescope to be constructed in the Vatican. He was hoping to extend the message that the Church is not anti-science. After the Galileo debacle, it was a way of trying to right some wrongs from the past. In the late 1980’s the Church found that the ambient light in Rome and surrounding areas was too bright to carry out astronomical studies. So they located a telescope on Mount Graham, one of the top places on earth in terms of darkness and low humidity, which is a requirement for these hi tech scopes. So the vatican observatory foundation put a telescope up there. But there are many groups and universities from around the world that have their telescopes there. The newest one, LUCIFER, was paid for and put there by an international coalition of astronomers. The Vatican has nothing to do with this one other than it is on the same Mount Graham. I have written to the University of Arizona to check out if there is a connection and this is what I received:
    “Dear Dr. Rentler,

Thank you for your email and your interest. I can ease your concerns – the Vatican Observatory has nothing to do with the LUCIFER project. LUCIFER is merely an acronym given to the instrument to shorten its name ( Large Binocular Telescope Near-infrared Utility with Camera and Integral Field Unit for Extragalactic Research). The instrument and all of its components are run by a consortium of astronomy researchers based in Germany. It is a mere coincidence that the Large Binocular Telescope, which houses the LUCIFER instrument, happens to be on the same location as the Vatican Observatory’s telescope (Mount Graham in Southeastern Arizona), but that is a different device and there is no connection to the Large Binocular Telescope or the LUCIFER instrument.

Hoping to have helped end the rumors and Yours sincerely,

    Dear Mr. Stolte:
Sorry to take your time with this, but I have been reading across the internet that the Vatican has purchased and named the new telescope Lucifer. Of course they are trying to link Catholicism with the devil. My understanding is that the Vatican Observatory Organization has no financial or controlling interest whatsoever in the new LBT telescope. An article in Popular Science magazine made the spurious connection and an internet legend was born.
If you could just let me know if it is true that the Vatican has not named or purchased this telescope, that would be helpful to end these silly rumors.
    Thanks so much

    Russ Rentler, M.D.

    • seems to be good evidence russ and thankyou..but..ponder this..why do you call a telescope lucifer? and who is really trying to make a connection here..the creators of that name knew exactly what they were doing and they know who they work why did they do it?..large binocular telescope does not make the anagram graham isnt the best place to put a telescope either..thats why the europeans are building theirs in chile..the vatican placed theirs at mt graham to share information with an already established set up..thats pretty obvious..thanks russ

  10. The vatican scope was there first so I suspect the Germans who named the new one were trying to give the jesuit astronomers a little dig. The proximity of the vatican scope to this one does not indict the catholics. I received an email from the head of the vatican observatory foundation in rome and this was his reply:

    Dear Dr. Rentler–

Thanks for writing — that’s a new one on me! (Lucifer? what an odd name for a telescope; we’re looking for dark sites, after all.)

We generally have learned not to respond to such attacks; they just give the attacker the attention they crave, and give the attack more publicity than it deserves. But thanks for letting us know, and thanks for writing…

    • once again..great work russ..and many appear to have debunked this story..but as you also say..the germans knew what they were up to by naming it LUCIFER 🙂

What (WHO) THEY ARE SEEKING? (not Niburu) which has just been created as of late; another smokescreen and diversion by the Jesuits to keep eyes off Pontifex Maximus! They are looking for Jesus Christ’s “SOON” Second Coming! Satan knows the scriptures better than man!

    • the vatican denies its theirs..check out the comments on my original post

      • I know… OF course they do… obvious…they deny all things…I watched the history channel… they placed a show titled “the 10 best ways to DESTROY planet Earth”! (what a mindset… between the 3rd and 4th way a female (from Jesuit Arizona)!!!! appeared and stated in a split secong”BLOW IT UP”! Hence verifying to me that the Lucifer Project is real, alive and well, and exactly what the scriptures tell us in Revelation 16. I believe they shall then at that precise time via bluebeam set MARY (who is dead and in her grave) according to the Holr Word Of god; declaring “Man MUST return to the “ONLY” church=Roman Catholicism! Which is Babylon “MYSTERY” Religion / Lucifer “SUN” Worship/ 666. The total undisputed, undeniable historical, factual evidence is on my site. Their documents! NOT mine!

        • yes i regarded the vatican poster/comments as a shill..they love putting it in our face..worship of “other” dead people isnt what i was taught at sunday school!

  14. not to offend you…..

and i did read you previous comment (prior to posting)…

    Lord bless.

  18. I wanted to find out if what my friend said was true ….he claim all the observatories are owned by the Vatican. Is it possible that the Vatican through some method of disguising their involvement are hiding their interest or level of control of the information gathered by these observatories?… People used to die at the hand of the holy Roman Catholic church. Galileo had to hide, then he was tried, then they left him in his house to die by the mandate of the church. Would it be possible despite world governments, world religions, and world social consciousness that the Vatican has been able to continue to suppress science around the world?… I don’t own an observatory so I’m forced to believe what they have to say.. but why would I believe the church?… I am Roman Catholic. What if Niburu’s elliptical orbit is 3,500 year’s wouldn’t it have returned.? The truth is hidden…..the truth is coming out…..but who is behind it ?…Why? How was it hidden for so long…..?

    • good questions..i dont have answers for..but make no mistake..there are huge amounts of hidden history and many many great secrets sitting in the vatican..
