Clinton and Gates in Australia to discuss defence strategies

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton speaks during a town-hall event at the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization on Tuesday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

THE Obama administration is involved in top-level talks with Australia on efforts to combat cyber attacks on satellite communications.

The attacks could blunt the technological advantage of the US and allied military forces.

The US and Australia are expected to sign off on an enhanced cyber-defence development program at the AUSMIN talks on defence and foreign policy issues in Melbourne on Monday.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Defence Secretary Robert Gates will meet Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd and Defence Minister Stephen Smith.

Sources close to the talks told The Australian the vulnerability of modern weapons systems and the satellites they relied on would be a significant issue for discussion.

There is growing alarm at the efforts China, in particular, is putting into cyber warfare, targeting both military and civil equipment and communications networks crucial to defence and to the strength of modern economies.
