The Royal Collection of art has just become several iconic works richer, as the Queen has purchased a set of Andy Warhol prints of herself.
The Royal Collection bought the four 1985 prints, made in Andy Warhol’s signature pop art style, to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, The Daily Telegraph reports.
These bright-colored prints are believed to be among the last creations made by the cult pop artist before he died. Produced using a 1977 photograph of the Queen they formed part of a series titled, ‘Reigning Queens’. The portfolio also features Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Queen Margrethe of Denmark and Queen Ntombi Twala of Swaziland.
All works of the series are finished with so-called “diamond dust” – pieces of broken glass, shining like diamonds.
The artworks will go on public display in Windsor Castle later this year as a part of the exhibition, The Queen: Portraits of a Monarch.
The Royal Collection is one of the largest art collections in the world, featuring more than a million works. British monarchs have been adding to the collection for over 500 years, reflecting the tastes and preferences of the then Royalty.
