Sixty mayors from around the world met with Pope Francis at the Vatican on Tuesday to discuss climate change. The leaders of American cities including New York, San Francisco, New Orleans, and Boston stood in line with officials from Stockholm, Madrid, and Vancouver to pledge, one at a time, to work to cut their cities’ emissions and to help the poor adapt as climate change takes its toll.

The conference was put together by the Vatican in the weeks after the pope released his encyclical on climate change. Its main aim was to draw attention to the potential for crafting a meaningful climate deal during U.N. negotiations in December. “I have a great hopes in the Paris summit,” the pope said in a speech on Tuesday. “I have great hopes that a fundamental agreement is reached. The United Nations needs to take a very strong stand on this.”

But the meeting of mayors was also a recognition that much of the work to fight climate change is taking place at the grassroots level, and that local officials are in a better place to harness that energy than national-level politicians. Cities also have the power to make a substantial difference in the fight against climate change: They’re responsible for 75 percent of global CO2 emissions.

A number of politicians from the United States spoke, including California Gov. Jerry Brown, whose state has taken some of the boldest steps to combat climate change in the country. In a speech, Brown denounced climate deniers who are spending “billions on trying to keep from office people such as yourselves and elect troglodytes and other deniers of the obvious science.”

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee also spoke, announcing new goals for their cities: NYC will cut its emissions 40 percent by 2030, and San Francisco will have its municipal vehicles running on renewable fuels by the end of the year.

In addition to climate change, the conference sought to address slavery, another human rights issue to which Pope Francis has tried to draw greater attention. Climate change and slavery are more related than they might at first appear, the pope said — they’re both issues that largely affect the world’s poor, and about which U.N. efforts can, in theory, make a difference.

Pope Francis on Tuesday urged the United Nations to take a “very strong stand” on climate change at a landmark summit this year in Paris on global warming.

The pope spoke at a Vatican-hosted conference of mayors and governors from major world cities who signed a declaration urging global leaders to take bold action at the U.N. summit, saying it may be the last chance to tackle human-induced global warming.

“I have a great hopes in the Paris summit,” he said. “I have great hopes that a fundamental agreement is reached. The United Nations needs to take a very strong stand on this.”

Last month, the pope issued an encyclical on climate change, the first ever dedicated to the environment. The call to his church’s 1.2 billion members could spur the world’s Catholics to lobby policymakers on ecology issues and climate change.

The Vatican conference linked climate change and modern slavery because, according to an introductory paper, “global warming is one of the causes of poverty and forced migration”.

Francis, speaking in unprepared comments in Spanish to the group at the end of the first day, said he hoped the Paris summit would address “particularly how it (climate change) affects the trafficking of people.”

The conference is the Vatican’s latest attempt to influence the Paris summit in December, the purpose of which is to reach a global agreement to combat climate change after past failures.

Mayors from South America, Africa, the United States, Europe and Asia signed a declaration stating that the Paris summit “may be the last effective opportunity to negotiate arrangements that keep human-induced warming below 2 degrees centigrade.”

    Methinks that because they are speaking out against climate-change, We, the People should be there in September and at every occasion to remind them that it’s NOT ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE !!!

    IT’S ABOUT REGIME CHANGE !!!;
    Time to nip Pax Romana in the bud; we will be filing on the unholy sea with the ITNJ (www.itnj.org) by early 2016;

    This brings to mind my favourite song by John Denver:
    “It’s about time, it’s about changes, and it’s about time”

  3. CO2 affects people trafficking ???? Whit !
    Wars affect people trafficking and make the poor poorer.
    Any climate change measures will make the poor poorer since it taxes industry and steals land from peasants to grow crops for diesel oil.
    Ludicrous . Could you imagine Peter and Paul preaching to Nero about CO2 emissions from horses , slaves , and animals in the coliseum – lol

    Francis has a degree in chemistry I heard , so he must know it is a scam – so why does he become the climate Pope.
    So instead of saying “the devil made me do it” a criminal can say it was climate change what did it – lol

  4. global warming is NON Sense… so is the Pope… He is controlled by a dark pope… if he was not he would be investing the trillions of gold into helping the world.. and educating the world.. with real truth… There is Universal LAW of Source which is not the same as the Law of the Planet or the Law of GOD that created man in his Image because that God also has a creator for we are all gods… on our way to becoming a never ending unfolding of love and Pure Peaceful Light… the best way to change the world is by peaceful non compliance… and just turn the other cheek… turn off the TV.. and do not protest… spend your time doing more important things like meditating.. or whatever needs to be done… like growing our own food… healing the planet.. accepting the upgrades currently taking place from the sun and get ready for Wave X coming in September… yay

  5. The Ministry of Mayors ?

    these people just get more pathetic as the world turns

  7. It’s rather significant if you think about it.

    Detroit was the great city of the Industrial Revolution, and today it’s dead, looks literally like hell…..so I imagine it is the proper place for the symbolic satanic symbol they unveiled….no future for the children who are left to exist in this mess created by the ‘giants’ of industry who came and fed off the land and it’s people, and left it decimated…… 😦
