The mayor of London has a simple message for US President Barack Obama over Britain’s upcoming referendum on membership in the European Union: Butt out.

In a strikingly combative article published on Monday, the flamboyant mayor, Boris Johnson, accused the US of “exorbitant hypocrisy” in urging Britain to vote to stay in the bloc, given that the former defends its own sovereignty with “hysterical vigilance”.

Mr Johnson’s strident criticism in the Telegraph newspaper comes amid reports that Mr Obama will visit Britain next month and will urge Britons to vote to remain in the 28-nation EU. The London mayor is on the other side of the fence, campaigning for severed ties with the bloc ahead of the June 23 referendum.

Mr Johnson isn’t leaping to Mr Cameron’s defence, though – indeed, they are on opposite sides in the EU referendum debate – but his comments are sure to add to the ill winds gusting across the Atlantic.

The relationship between the US and Britain is famously a “special” one, and it is unusual for politicians to publicly lash out at their counterparts nearly 6500 kilometres away. But Mr Johnson is no stranger to controversy. In the article, he argued that Americans would never allow a similar loss of sovereignty as Britain is forced to accept under its EU membership.

    • Foreign banks are threatening firms trying to borrow money with higher repayments if Britain quits the EU.

Lenders are preparing to introduce controversial ‘flexit’ clauses in company documents, enabling them to raise the cost of a loan in the event of Brexit.

Wall Street’s Goldman Sachs and Germany’s biggest lender Deutsche Bank are among a number of City giants reported to have broached clients about the move.
