Israel urges citizens to leave Turkey immediately amid attack threat
Israel Monday called on its nationals vacationing or doing business in Turkey to leave the country “immediately.”
Citing “concern for additional attacks,” the National Security Council called on Israeli citizens not to visit Turkey at this time and on those already there to “leave at the earliest opportunity.” It said it had reason to believe that the extremist organization Islamic State was planning more attacks against tourists, especially Israelis.
The council raised its travel warning for Turkey for the second time in eight days, which now stands at level two, meaning a “high, concrete threat.” It had been raised on March 20 to level three, meaning a “basic, concrete threat” following a suicide bombing in Istanbul on March 19, which killed three Israeli tourists and an Iranian citizen and injured dozens of people.
Terrorists from the so-called Islamic State have advanced plans to murder Jewish children in Turkey, targeting kindergartens and schools and youth centres, Sky News can reveal exclusively.
Information on what intelligence officials are describing as ‘an imminent’ attack was obtained from six operatives from the ‘Caliphate’ who were arrested in the southern city of Gaziantep over the last week.
The most likely target of an attack is Istanbul’s synagogue in Beyoglu which also has a community centre and a school attached to it.
‘In light of these circumstances, extraordinary security measures are being taken above and beyond the high alert level already in place by the Turkish police, as well as vigilance within the Jewish community,’ an intelligence source told Sky News.
‘Undercover and other covert counter-terror measures are being implemented around the clock.
‘This is a more than credible threat. This is an active plot,’ the source added.
