Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk has announced his resignation in the wake of a months-long political crisis that paralysed the government and stopped the release of vital Western aid.

“Having done everything to ensure stability and make a smooth transition of power possible, I decided to step down from the post of Prime Minister of Ukraine,” the pro-Western leader said in a television address.

“The political crisis in the country was created artificially. The desire to change one person blinded politicians and paralysed their political will for real change,” he said.

The tough-talking Prime Minister’s decision comes barely two months after he survived a bruising parliamentary no-confidence hearing in which MPs took turns takings jabs at the job he has done since February 2014.

Mr Yatsenyuk, 41, said President Petro Poroshenko’s party had already nominated parliament speaker Volodymyr Groysman to succeed him and that he would not stand in the way.

Mr Poroshenko’s party member Vadym Denysenko added that he was “99.9 per cent certain that Groysman” would become the new premier.

“From today onwards, I see my goals in a broader light than just heading the government,” Mr Yatsenyuk said.

He vowed to push through “new election legislation, constitutional reform, legal reforms … international support for Ukraine, and its membership in the European Union and NATO”.

But he failed to mention what future role he saw for himself in politics or how he would achieve those goals.

He said he will ask MPs to approve his resignation on Tuesday.
