For now, France is saying “No” to the all-encompassing TTIP trade deal with Europe, as it goes against its “essential principles,” President Hollande has said. The French trade minister has also criticized Washington’s reluctance to budge on many points.

“We will never accept questioning essential principles for our agriculture, our culture and for the reciprocity of access to public [procurement] markets,” Francois Hollande said at a meeting of left-wing politicians in Paris, according to AFP. “At this stage [of talks] France says ‘No.’”

Speaking the day after negotiation papers were leaked by Greenpeace, France’s trade minister, Matthias Fekl, called Washington’s unwillingness to budge on many points “unacceptable,” saying it is jeopardizing the entire talks.

“In view of the United States’ state of mind today, that seems to be the most likely option,” trade secretary Matthias Fekl said on Europe 1 radio, when answering if he thought the negotiations were in danger of stopping.

“We want reciprocity. Europe offers a lot and gets very little in return. This is not acceptable,” Fekl said.  “It is an agreement which, as it would be today, would be a bad deal… “It can not be agreed without France and even less against France,” he added.

The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership has been discussed behind closed doors since 2013. It will affect a trade zone inhabited by 850 million people, and has received staunch criticism from many Europeans, who believe it is not in their best interest.

Climate protection, jobs, food safety and online privacy rights will be whittled away under the controversial Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), an explosive tranche of leaked documents suggest.

The leaked texts, which shed light on secretive EU-US trade negotiations, indicate TTIP could tear asunder environmental and consumer protections many Europeans hold dear.

Greenpeace Netherlands published the documents on Tuesday to dismantle a veil of secrecy over the watershed deal and lay bare its implications for climate protection, human health, labour rights, internet privacy rights and the very social fabric of Europe itself.

The NGO, which has a long history of environmental campaign work and research, obtained the negotiation texts from an unknown source. It worked with a number of high-profile media outlets on the data, including Hamburg-based TV station NDR, Cologne-headquartered public broadcasting group WDR and renowned Munich-based newspaper Süddeutscher Zeitung.

TTIP will create the world’s biggest free-trade zone, scrapping tariffs and other obstacles to the trade of goods and services between the US and the EU. Supporters insist it will encourage investment and create employment, while critics warn it will mark a decline in state sovereignty as Europeans know it.

The leaked documents, obtained by Greenpeace Netherlands, shine a light directly on the negotiation positions of the EU and the US, and give roughly 1 billion citizens across Europe and America the opportunity to have an informed debate on the deal.

TTIP’s opponents from Bristol to Brussels have branded this latest disclosure the trade agreement’s death knell.

  1. I normally don’t care for Greenpeace, but I thank them for this.

  2. “Supporters insist it will encourage investment and create employment”
Just look at the horrific results of the U.S. free trade agreements, like NAFTA, CAFTA, & GATT…does it look at all like it has “created employment?” It has, in fact impoverished the largest middle class in the world.
Both the TPP & TTIP destroy national sovereignty, which is what the globalists want. They seek to make theiir own little corporate empires the world’s new “kingdoms,” with themselves as the new kings & queens, unelected & answerable to no one. Simply tyrants ruling over wage-slaves & poorly paid peasantry.
Note, too, that once they have looted the middle classes of the world & sentenced them to lives of destitution, the economies slow to a crawl, I only mountains of debt can keep the markets APPARENTLY floating…just look at the overall debt now held by the corporations of the world as well as the debt held by the governments of the world. This system is unsustainable, as sales crash when the people are poor.
Remember too, Eurobros, when you sign the TTIP, you will be subjected to all the “free” trade woes that America now has, as America will become a simple conduit for cheap, slave-made goods from South & Central America & the Pacific Rim.
    Don’t do it, Europe.
