Venezuelan security forces have fired tear gas at protesters in the capital, Caracas, during one of 20 opposition rallies across the crisis-hit nation venting fury at President Nicolas Maduro and demanding his ouster.

The demonstrations were the first major test of a state of emergency the unpopular President imposed this week that gives broad powers to security forces to maintain public order.

It follows Parliament’s rejection of the state of emergency in a vote on Tuesday, saying it “deepens the severe disruption of constitutional and democratic order that Venezuela is suffering through”.

The Venezuelan President said he was prepared to escalate the state of emergency after Wednesday’s protests if “violent” anti-government acts occurred.

“I will not hesitate if necessary to make such a decree to fight for the peace and security of this country,” he said.

Protesters were demanding authorities stop stalling over a recall referendum with 1.8 million signatures to force a presidential election.

In a stinging rebuke to Mr Maduro’s dismissal of the referendum as “not viable” and his increasing authoritarianism, the head of the Organisation of American States (OAS) called the Venezuelan president a “traitor” to his people.

OAS Secretary-General Luis Almagro said in an open letter that if Mr Maduro impeded the referendum, he would become “just another petty dictator, like so many this hemisphere has had”.
