Clinton picks Tim Kaine as VP

Democratic presumptive nominee Hillary Clinton has picked Virginian senator Tim Kaineto be her running mate.

Kaine was considered a safe pick and is fluent in Hispanic.

The move comes after a new poll, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has pulled nearly even with Democratic rival Hillary Clinton for the first time since May following the Republican National Convention.

The national online poll found that 41 per cent of likely voters support Clinton, while 38 per cent support Trump.

Before the convention, Trump trailed Clinton by nearly 10 percentage points.

Kaine was a Coro Foundation fellow in Kansas City in 1978. He then attended Harvard Law School, taking a break during law school to work with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps in Honduras. Kaine worked in Honduras for nine months from 1980 to 1981, helping Jesuit missionaries who ran a Catholic school in El Progreso. Kaine is fluent in Spanish as a result of his year in Honduras.

Kaine graduated from Harvard Law School with a law degree in 1983, and was admitted to the Virginia Bar in 1984.
