Dozens of media outlets shut in Turkey

The Turkish authorities have announced the closure of dozens of media organisations, as a crackdown continues following the failed coup on 15 July.

Three news agencies, 16 TV channels, 45 papers and 15 magazines will be shut.

Separately, nearly 1,700 members of the armed forces – including 149 generals and admirals – have been discharged.

The government says US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen was behind the army-led attempted coup – a claim he denies. At least 246 people died during the coup.

More than 2,000 people were injured.

The closure of the media outlets and the dismissal of the members of the armed forces were announced in Turkey’s official Resmi Gazete.

The names of the media organisations have not yet been officially released, but local media suggest that while most are relatively small, provincial outlets, several dailies and agencies with a national audience have also been targeted.

Among those discharged from the armed forces are 87 army generals, 30 air force generals and 32 admirals.

Earlier on Wednesday, the authorities ordered the detention of another 47 journalists – just several days after similar warrants were issued for 42 reporters.

Those on the new list were mostly members of the now defunct Zaman newspaper, Turkish officials were quoted as saying by local media.

The Turkish army also revealed that 8,651 members, or 1.5%, of the nation’s armed forces took part in the failed coup.

It said the plotters had 35 planes, 37 helicopters, 74 tanks and three ships.

The purge continues ahead of an important meeting of the Supreme Military Council.

Separately, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has already held talks with the leaders of the main opposition Republican and Nationalist parties.

Turkish authorities ordered the closure of more than 130 media outlets on Wednesday in a crackdown following July’s failed coup, Reuters reports, citing CNN Turk. Some 1,600 military personnel were also sacked in the Turkish government’s latest move.

The Turkish government shutdown three news agencies, 23 radio stations, 16 TV channels, 45 newspapers, 15 magazines, and 29 publishers and distributors in their crackdown on the media.

  8. The Land of Turkey in Biblical Prophecy

With all the media coverage about the mayhem produced by the military coup in Turkey, I thought I would take a moment to tell you what the Bible says about future prophetic events surrounding the land of Turkey. Modern Turkey covers the geographical region that historians refer to as Anatolia. Although Anatolia was originally the home of the Hittites, history reveals that Turkey has faced numerous people migrations and invasions and today contains several ethnic groups. However, Turkey holds not only a place of history but also a place of prophecy.

    According to one source,

“Regarding biblical prophecy this region comes into the discussion especially in Ezekiel 38. Here Ezekiel prophesies of a coalition of countries that will attack unsuspecting Israel. Several of the countries mentioned in this chapter are located in Anatolia.”[1]

The prophet Ezekiel speaks of Gog in chapters 38-39. Who is this? Bible teachers agree that attempts to identify Gog with a historical figure are weak and unconvincing. However, the other names in the text, (Magog, Tubal, and Meshech) are mentioned in Genesis 10:2 and 1 Chronicles 1:5 as sons of Japheth. Consequently, in Ezekiel’s day their descendants inhabited what is now eastern Turkey.

Here is what you need to know—Ezekiel spoke of a coalition of several nations, many of whom are today aligned with the Soviet Union. These include Iran (“Persia”), Sudan and northern Ethiopia (“Cush”), Libya (“Put”), and Turkey (“Meshech,” “Tubal,” “Gomer,” and “Beth Togarmah”). All these nations will unite in a wicked alliance to attack God’s people—Israel (cf. Ezekiel 38:2–3, 5–6). Since there is no historical record of such an attack, many Bible teachers, including myself, believe that this will happen in the future. Thus, Ezekiel speaks about the land of Turkey in prophetic terms before the Lord comes again.

    • Yes, you are correct Rev, and all seven churches spoken to in the book of Revelation 3 are in Turkey as is Pergamon, the Throne of Satan

Intentionally I presume, it is also why Barack Obama’s stage was set during his Democratic Nomination with a replica of the Altar of the Church of Pergamum. That altar had been taken from Turkey by the Germans’, rebuilt and brought to Germany during Hitler’s reign.

Ancient Pergamon’s strategic location along both land and sea trading routes contributed to its prosperity. Pilgrims from all over the Mediterranean region would flock to the city to engage in commerce or to visit the famous Asclepion, a center of medical treatments.

Juxtaposed sharply against this image of enlightened learning is that of “Satan’s Throne,” as described by the prophet John of Patmos (Revelation 2:12-13), which some scholars interpret as referring to the Great Altar of Pergamon, one of the most magnificent surviving structures from the Greco-Roman world.

Pergamon rose to prominence during the years of the Greek empire’s division following the death of Alexander the Great in 323 B.C. His short-lived empire was partitioned among his generals, with General Lysimachus inheriting the then-settlement of Pergamon and its wealth. Due largely to its strategic position along land and sea trading routes and in part to the wealth of the Attalid kings who ruled the kingdom, the city enjoyed centuries of prosperity that continued when it passed peacefully to Rome’s control in 133 B.C. From that point on, Pergamon’s fate was inextricably linked to that of Rome, and it rose and fell in tandem with the great Roman Empire.

So, is this also symbolic of another dying empire in hopes of the little ‘gods’ creating another ‘new world’ of their own?

Who else but the Jesuits and supposedly the zionist jews are associated with ‘science’ today?

      • “To the angel of the church in Pergamum write:

These are the words of him who has the sharp, double-edged sword. I know where you live—where Satan has his throne. Yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me, not even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was put to death in your city—where Satan lives. Rev 2

      • The Antichrist Nation is not ROME but TURKEY. Get ready for the End Times.

The “Europe” model for an Antichrist kingdom became prominent during the rise of the European Union four decades ago during the seventies when self-proclaimed prophecy ‘experts’ began to announce that the end is near and countless books were written to the effect making such theory dominate the American church.

The theory stemmed from a common interpretation of Daniel 2 claiming that the Roman Empire model included two legs, a leg they claim stems from Rome and another eastern leg centered in Constantinople, which today is in Turkey. Therefore, the European model, in this view insists that Turkey joins the European Union since it must include both the eastern and western parts of the Roman Empire.

But the current news today shows that after his victory speech, President Erdoğan of Turkey mentioned a “New Turkey” and his cabinet made it clear that his government is moving away from joining the European Union altogether. With this new foreign policy, Turkey’s EU aspirations may be shelved, according to Erdoğan’s chief adviser, Yiğit Bulut.

Bulut, in a recent analysis, outlined a controversial vision for a new Turkey in the wake of Erdoğan’s election victory, a vision that suggests cutting ties with the EU.

While some are still adamant about the European model, not all Bible scholars agree. For example, the prominant Rev. Dr. Matthew Henry over three centuries ago dealt with this controversey:

“Who is this enemy — whose rise, reign and ruin are here foretold? Interpreters are not agreed. Some will have the Fourth Kingdom to be that of the Seleucidae and the ‘little horn’ to be Antiochus…. Others will have the Fourth Kingdom to be that of the Romans, and the ‘little horn’ to be Julius Caesar and the succeeding emperors, as Calvin says. The Antichrist, the Papal Kingdom, says Mr. Joseph Mede…. Others make the ‘little horn’ to be the Turkish Empire; so Luther, Vatablus, and others. Now I cannot prove either side to be in the wrong. And therefore, since prophecies sometimes have many fulfilling and we ought to give Scripture its full latitude (in this as in many other controversies) — I am willing to allow that they are both in the right.” (Henry: A Commentary on the Holy Bible, with Practical Remarks andObservations, London: Marshall Bros. Ltd., n.d., IV:1270f)

So besides the Papal Kingdom (Europe) as a theory, there was also the “Seleucidae” (Seleucid) which is the “Turkish Empire” model which was the most prominent view historically. These are not isolated interpretations, even amongst the most major Protestant theologians.

Today this Seleucid region is centered on the areas of the Ottoman Empire, which overtook the Roman Empire at its fall in Constantinople during the Muslim invasion by the Ottomans under Muhammad II in 1453.

Furthermore, no one historically could point to any burdens or judgments in end-times context in any literal references in the Bible that include any European entity and the Seleucid-Grecian model has all its historic regions literally included in Scripture by their ancient names. The Seleucid-Grecian model today would include a landmass stemming from the Levant and not the Adriatic (1) and includes a swath of lands from the Middle East, Turkey, Central Asia, which includes the former Soviet republics (Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan) to the Persian Gulf and Eastern Anatolia, Iran, Afghanistan and even parts of India in Pakistan. This is the 10-40 Window and are currently all Islamic.

And the current news that just came out of the Middle East by prominent Turkish government officials and analysts (2) is beginning to confirm. As soon as the President-elect Recep Tayyip Erdoğan won, the idea of a “New Turkey” was explained by his government to represent a new understanding in Turkish foreign policy, through which the country is expected to increasingly move away from the European Union ideal while focusing on its relations with China, Russia and the former Soviet republics (Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan).

Furthermore, in an article published by the pro-government Sabah daily, Erdoğan’s chief adviser Mr. Bulut said that Turkey needs to stop aspiring to be a member of the EU and instead seek to expand its influence in the Middle East and elsewhere.
