The theory that we might all be living in a computer simulation has gotten so popular among Silicon Valley’s tech elites that two billionaires are now apparently asking scientists to help break us out of the simulation.

That’s according to a new profile in The New Yorker about Y Combinator’s Sam Altman. The story delves into Altman’s life and successes at the helm of the famous boot-camp and investment fund for tech startups, and doesn’t shy away from the quirkier aspects of Altman’s character.

In the piece, Altman discusses his theories about being controlled by technology and delves into the simulation theory, which is the idea that human beings are unwittingly just the characters in someone else’s computer simulation.

The simulation idea has gained popularity among Silicon Valley’s elite — it’s so popular that even Elon Musk is tired of talking about it. But now, a few of the tech industry’s billionaires might be doing something about it.

Here’s how the New Yorker tells it:

Many people in Silicon Valley have become obsessed with the simulation hypothesis, the argument that what we experience as reality is in fact fabricated in a computer; two tech billionaires have gone so far as to secretly engage scientists to work on breaking us out of the simulation.

The piece doesn’t give any clue as to who those two billionaires are — although it’s easy to hazard a few guesses at who they might be, like Musk himself or Altman’s friend Peter Thiel — but it’s fascinating to see how seriously people are taking this theory. According to Musk, it’s the most popular topic of conversation right now.

“…it got to the point where basically every conversation was the AI slash simulation conversation and my brother and I finally agreed that we’d ban any such conversations if we’re ever in a hot tub. Because that really kills the magic,” Musk said on stage at Vox Media’s Code Conference in June.

this meme just wont go away..

  1. and just how much is THAT going to cost us Elon?

  3. The Universe is not a “simulation” as it is not simulating anything. It is as it has been “dreamed” into existence by the being that “imagined it into existence.”
They are on the right track, nothing we perceive as being “real” is made of anything that fits our definition of “real.”
We, and everything else in the expanse of the universe (multiverse?), are coherent impressions formed from the manipulation of (or creation of) a vast energy field (this explanation is not entirely accurate, but suffices for this post).
What creates this infrastructure of coherency? We don’t really know, but it is probably inevitable that tech moguls would tend to see it as a computer, and that our reality is a simulation of a “real” reality. But they are misled by their own biases.
If we are a simulation of a “real” reality, then how is that “real” reality formed? You can get caught in a fractal, here.
And why a computer? Again, they think of this level of complexity as being impossible without one…impossible for US, maybe, but that does not preclude the existence of a being to which this level of technical imagination is possible.
And if you “break out” of your existence, you will cease to exist. You cannot step out of existence to look back on it, when you are part of that existence and cannot exist yourself without staying within that infrastructure.
Believe it or not, this information has been known for so long that its origination has been lost to history. It’s not even a secret, but it’s so difficult for even intelligent people to wrap their minds around, that it is normally disregarded by most, so learning of it provides no benefit.
It has only been from the 1930’s that physics has given its “stamp of approval” to the concept and, even then, only the most basic elements of this line of reasoning.
It’s not a computer, although I see no reason why a sufficiently advanced computer could not achieve the same ends…although no computer we’re capable of building at this time could achieve such complexity & detail.
And even if we are ever able to construct such a device, the computer itself would be due to the imaginings of that much greater being.

    • Great post, thanks, SD!

      Brahman?

“The Shatapatha Brahman says that Brahma was born of the Supreme Being Brahman and the female energy known as Maya. “

    • Brilliant. Thank you. These men are playing God and quite frankly don’t have the looks to pull it off! Rather than admitting such a simple explanation such as “there is a God,” they prefer to make things too complicated that the average person cannot possibly understand what in God’s name they are even talking about.
