Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has chided the United States for halting the planned sale of 26,000 rifles to his country, calling those behind the decision “fools” and “monkeys” and indicating he might turn to Russia and China instead.

“Look at these monkeys, the 26,000 firearms we wanted to buy, they don’t want to sell,” Mr Duterte said.

Mr Duterte’s tirades against the former colonial power are routine during his speeches and he added that he once believed in Washington, but had since lost respect for what is the Philippines’ biggest ally.

The US State Department reportedly halted the sale of the assault rifles to the Philippine police after US Senator Ben Cardin said he would oppose it, according to US officials.

Senate aides said Mr Cardin, the top Democrat on the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was reluctant to provide the weapons given concern about human rights violations in the Philippines during Mr Duterte’s bloody, four-month-old war on drugs.

More than 2,300 people have been killed in police operations or by suspected vigilantes as part of Mr Duterte’s anti-narcotics campaign, which was the lynchpin of his election campaign.

Mr Duterte has vented his anger at the United States for raising concerns about the extra-judicial killings.

  1. The ironic thing is, weapons are about the only domestic industry the U.S. has left, due to shipping our industries (mostly) to the Pacific rim countries.
Frankly, I’d rather the U.S. be selling manufactured goods other than weapons, with our weapons only being sold to very select & trusted governments, but with our trade imbalance hemorrhaging 30 billion dollars a month from our economy, we need to sell everything we can.
Balancing our trade through renegotiating our trade agreements & using tariffs to end the dumping in our markets would give our government more leeway into who it will allow weapons sales to and who it will not, and our current election battle will decide this.
As with everything else, you’re seeing an interplay of politics and economics here, and it seems the U.S. is about to cut ties with the Philippines altogether. This will mean gaining some form of “moral high ground’ I suppose…but at the expense of more lost U.S. jobs for our citizens.
Globalism is wreaking havoc on the entire world, and if people could just see the patterns and domino-like connections across the globe, they’d realize that the entire Earth is simply too large & complicated to govern or control effectively as a whole. This is why countries exist, and why each one needs to be responsible for the well-being of its own citizens and the welfare of its own clay, with international considerations secondary to this.
In other words, once we have all cleaned up our own backyards, THEN we can start talking about cleaning up the rest of the world. If Duterte is so desperate for guns & bullets, why is he not building his own?
