Goldman Sachs Group Inc. on Wednesday named 84 new partners, a somewhat smaller crop of executives than in years past as core businesses remain challenged.

The newly minted crop will join 450 or so existing partners, about 1% of Goldman’s total head count, in one of the most exclusive clubs on Wall Street. Goldman partners, selected every two years, are paid more and have the opportunity to invest in firm deals.

The newest pool was whittled from 133 candidates, according to a person familiar with the process, and those selected were notified personally by Chief Executive and Chairman Lloyd Blankfein or his top deputy, Gary Cohn, Wednesday morning.

Nineteen of the new partners are women, a record 23% of the class.

About one-quarter of the class is investment bankers and another fourth is traders, proportions in line with 2014. Goldman made more partners than usual in support roles such as legal and compliance, and promoted two from its regulated banking unit, reflecting shifting priorities for the firm.
