A tsunami has been detected along Japan’s northern Pacific coast after a 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck off Fukushima this morning, triggering a widespread evacuation.

A 60cm tsunami was observed at Fukushima’s Onahama Port and a 90cm tsunami at Soma soon after, public broadcaster NHK said. The region is the same that was devastated by a tsunami following a massive earthquake in 2011.

A tsunami warning is in effect for Fukushima and has been extended to Miyagi prefecture, with the Japan Meteorological Agency warning residents the wave height could reach three metres.

“Damage due to tsunami waves is expected,” the warning said.

“Evacuate immediately from coastal regions and riverside areas to a safer place such as high ground or an evacuation building.

A cooling system at one of Fukushima’s nuclear plants has been restarted after a 7.3 magnitude earthquake and a small tsunami hit Japan’s northeast coast.

Tokyo Electric Power Co told national broadcaster NHK the water cooling system in reactor number that that supplies cold water to the nuclear rods in Fukushima’s Daini power plant had stopped.

Early reports show the cooling system is back online.

The power company is monitoring other reactors at Onagawa and the sister plant in Daiichi, Fukushima which was the centre of a catastrophic nuclear disaster in the 2011.

In March 2011 a 9.1 magnitude quake struck the east coast of Japan resulting in a tsunami which destroyed the emergency cooling units in the Fukushima nuclear power plant reactors. This caused reactor four to overheat leading to three nuclear meltdowns.

It was the worst nuclear disaster since 1986 Chernobyl catastrophe.

appears to be over..for now..the big one over 5 years ago was preceded by smaller ones like this..and they have a ticking time bomb sitting at fukushima..perhaps 2-3 of them..can you imagine the mess if they get another destructive quake and wave over the stricken plant?

  3. Some big earthquakes happening now.

Off California and then one by the Solomon Islands (with aftershocks in other regions). First one, I am hearing two reports of 6.8 or 6.5. The latter is recording a 8.0. Buoys are moving. Watch out Australia!
