The former president of Argentina, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, has been charged with corruption in the awarding of public construction contracts.

Federal Judge Julian Ercolini on Tuesday ordered a trial against Kirchner’s, who served as president from 2007-15, and her long-term planning minister, Julio de Vido.

Ercolini also froze Kirchner’s assets, estimated at more than 10 billion pesos ($893 million), the justice news portal CIJ said.

Among other co-defendants charged in the case is the contractor, Lazaro Baez, who already is on trial on charges of money laundering in the investigation.

Jose Lopez, the former state secretary for public buildings, was also charged. Lopez was arrested in June for allegedly trying to hide some $12.5 million in cash from an unexplained origin in a monastery.

Evidence was presented to the court that describes how during the Kirchner administration Grupo Austral, a company founded by Baez, received state contracts for road construction valued at more than $4 billion. These included illegal surcharges of an estimated $1 billion.

In June, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich has announced that Russia will not use genetically modified organisms (GMOs) to increase productivity in agriculture, while he was speaking on Friday at a session of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

“Russia has chosen a different path. We will not use these technologies”, he said.

As a result of this decision Russian products will be “one of the cleanest in the world” in terms of technology use, Dvorkovich continued. A bill for a full ban on the cultivation of GM crops is currently going through the State Duma.
