IRAQI forces have recaptured nearly 90 per cent of west Mosul from Islamic State and jihadists in the city are on the “brink of total defeat”, officers said.

Iraqi forces launched the massive operation to retake Mosul from IS nearly seven months ago, fighting their way to the jihadist-held city, retaking its eastern side and then attacking the west.

Brigadier General Yahya Rasool, spokesman for Iraq’s Joint Operations Command, told a news conference in Baghdad on Tuesday that IS now controls just over 10 per cent of west Mosul.

Both Staff Lieutenant General Abdulwahab al-Saadi, a senior Iraqi special forces commander, and Colonel John Dorrian, the spokesman for the US-led international coalition against IS, said that the end was near for jihadists in the city.

“They have two options: die and go to hell or raise the white flag. They have no third option,” General Saadi told AFP at his headquarters in Mosul.

“The enemy is completely surrounded,” Colonel Dorrian told the news conference in Baghdad. “The enemy is on the brink of total defeat in Mosul.”

The drive to retake Mosul has been supported by a campaign of coalition air strikes in and around the city.

Colonel Dorrian said that coalition strikes have destroyed more than 300 explosives-rigged vehicles in Mosul, as well as over 200 IS tunnels and more than a thousand jihadist fighting positions.

IS now controls just a handful of neighbourhoods around the Old City, one of the country’s heritage jewels.

  1. It just takes a little time and we will see Bush and Blair’s Middle East peace plan blossom

  2. “dude is missing the point..many want to be martyrs so they will stay..”

desire fuelled by captagon, for sure ;):

…ISIS “fighters” are cannon fodder…for the masters 😉

    • “Speaking to Newsweek , Dr. Raj Persaud, a fellow at the London-based Royal College of Psychiatrists, pointed out that 40 percent of Saudi drug users take Captagon, making the kingdom the biggest consumer of the substance. In October 2015, a Saudi prince was arrested after two tons of the pills were found aboard his private plane. (One pill of Captagon sells for around $20 in Saudi Arabia).”

Also according to the article, it is manufactured most in Syria, due to the ongoing fighting, law and order is not what it used to be. Manufacturing laboratories have been found in the Netherlands and Greece.

Undoubtedly some people in Greece would tend to gravitate toward any money making scheme for there are not a lot of them. Netherlands stereotypically is known as a tolerant drug country, but I do not know for sure.

  3. Will not be surprised if terrorist bombings are a regular occurrence in Mosul and surrounding region for some time to come. If the fighting just suddenly came to a halt, then I would be surprised.

    • thanks isabel..

    • “Sesame feels a world apart; the meditative peace of the surrounding countryside

Sesame’s members are Iran, Pakistan, Israel, Turkey, Cyprus, Egypt, the Palestinian Authority, Jordan and Bahrain. Iran and Pakistan do not recognise Israel, nor does Turkey recognise Cyprus, and everyone has their myriad diplomatic spats.”

It is about as odd and contrary a mix of nations as it seems it can get. The only other extreme polar opposites would be Japan and North Korea (even South Korea works with North Korea on the rare metals).
