Brazil’s Michel Temer charged with corruption

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-40413540

Brazilian President Michel Temer has been charged with accepting bribes by the country’s chief prosecutor.

It follows the release of an audio recording in which Mr Temer appears to encourage the payment of hush money to a jailed politician.

The charges have been delivered to a Supreme Court judge who must now decide if the case can be sent to the lower house of parliament.

The lower house would have to vote on whether President Temer can be tried.

Mr Temer denies wrongdoing and has vowed to prove his innocence.

He is deeply unpopular in Brazil but his centre-right party has been able to govern as part of a coalition.

Opposition parties have been demanding snap elections and his impeachment.

  1. “Should a President die, resign or be removed from office, a Vice-President succeeds as President.

The other officers in the line of succession do not become President in those cases. Instead, the next available person in line merely becomes Acting President, and the Constitution dictates that, whenever both the presidency and the vice-presidency become vacant, new elections are to be held. So in the case of an Acting President taking office due to a double vacancy in the presidency and vice-presidency, the Acting President serves only until the special election takes place and the newly elected President and Vice-President are sworn-in.”
