As anti-G20 protests begin Merkel says growth must be inclusive

As anti-globalization activists took to the streets in Hamburg ahead of this week’s G20 summit, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Sunday leaders will have to focus on sustainable and inclusive economic growth rather than their own prosperity.

In her weekly podcast, Merkel said this year’s G20 summit will delve into issues championed by protesters such as distribution of wealth and consumption of resources – alongside related issues like climate change, free markets, consumer protection and upholding social standards.

Hamburg police said 10,000 demonstrators marched peacefully in the rain in Hamburg on Sunday in a prelude to the July 7-8 gathering, where 21,000 police from across Germany will protect the meetings of the world’s 20 largest economies.

It was the first of 30 registered demonstrations this week. Some carried banners reading “Fight poverty”, “stop coal” and “Planet earth first”.

German authorities are bracing for trouble, worried the protests could turn violent as they did outside a G8 summit in Genoa, Italy in 2001 when one person was shot dead and hundreds injured.

“It’s not only going to be about (economic) growth but rather sustainable growth,” Merkel said. “We’ve got to have a ‘win-win’ situation for everyone. The issues obviously revolve around: how do we achieve inclusive or sustainable growth?”

Merkel, seeking a fourth term in a Sept. 24 election, outlined the issues as: “What are we doing with our resources? What are the rules for distribution of wealth? How many people are taking part? And how many countries are able to profit from that?”

Without mentioning the protests that have German security officials worried about possible acts of sabotage this week in the country’s second-largest city, Merkel noted that these non-traditional issues were forced onto the G20 agenda.

“If we simply try to carry on as we have in the past, the worldwide developments will definitely not be sustainable and inclusive,” she said. “We need the climate protection agreement, open markets and improved trade agreements in which consumer protection, social and environmental standards are upheld.”

In a speech to parliament last week, Merkel promised to fight for free trade and press on with multilateral efforts to combat climate change at the summit, challenging the “America First” policies of U.S. President Donald Trump.

  3. Freedom of Speech Comes to an End in Germany

The most anti-democratic law perhaps ever to pass any western government just passed in the German Bundestag last week. Even the opposition Social Democratic Party (SPD) votes to suppress free speech and it is all geared to end criticism of government. This new law obligates the operators of social networks to block off anything that they themselves view “might be” criminal within 24 hours of receipt of the complaint. Other illegal content must be “deleted” or “blocked” within seven days.
The problem is rather simple. It boils down to there is no judicial determination as to what might be criminal and there is nothing specifically deemed to be criminal in the act. The word “criminal” is left totally undefined. Traditionally, the foundation of law in a free society is known as DUE PROCESS.

This concept comes from the Bible. When Cain kills Abel, God knew what he had done. Nevertheless, he (1) summoned him, (2) asked him his side of the story, (3) judged him, and (4) sentenced him. It is presumed that God knew what took place, yet he still allowed Cain to explain and defend himself – i.e. Due Process of Law.

“Where is Abel your brother? And he said, “I do not know: am I my brother’s keeper?” And He said, “What have you done? Listen! your brother’s blood cries out to me from the soil. And so, cursed shall you be by the soil that gaped with its mouth to take your brother’s blood from your hand. If you till the soil, it will no longer give you strength. A restless wanderer shall you be on the earth.”…

  5. Rosneft, majority owned by Russian government, increased its’ operation by opening an office in Berlin back in May. Though the G20 countries spill blood amongst each other, they definitely continue to make deals with each other. Rosneft already owns three refiners in Germany, etc:

“The Head of Rosneft discussed the production activities with the managing directors of three refineries in Germany, shares in which Rosneft holds:PCK, Miro and Bayernoil.

In his report at the event, Igor Sechin, among other things, noted, «Over the past seven years, we have delivered 132 mtoe to Germany to the value of more than 75 billion euros, providing about a quarter of the country’s oil imports. Today we hold stakes at three large oil refineries and provide 5000 jobs directly at our enterprises in the country.»

«Within the next five years, Rosneft will send a total of 600 million euros to modernize its German refineries, of which 300 million euros have already been allocated,» Igor Sechin said. «Now a subsidiary of Rosneft will operate in Germany,» he added. «We are developing our business, including the area of delivering petroleum products to German consumers through supply networks, bunkering and aviation fuel.»”
