A series of mystery radio signals from space have been tracked to a dwarf galaxy three billion light years away.

Astronomers from the Breakthrough Listen initiative –  a global group of scientists and technologists dedicated to exploring signals of extra-terrestrial life – said they detected 15 repeating, fast radio bursts (FRBs) from the same mysterious source they picked up in 2012.

FRBs last only a few milliseconds and appear to come from deep space.

Two years ago, the same source became the first object to record a repeating radio burst, reports the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

The discovery on August 26 came from the only source whose location has been positively confirmed in space.

The dwarf galaxy signal that it was found in is much smaller than the Milky Galaxy, with about half the number of stars in it, estimated to be around 100 billion.

Details of the source remain elusive and nothing that scientists know of the region could be producing the signals.

But the latest research reveals the FRBs emit at higher frequencies than previously recorded and this discovery could help scientists find the source producing the bursts.

“Previously we thought there wasn’t much emission at high or low frequencies, but now it looks like there is,” Professor Avi Loeb of Harvard University said. “It’s twice as high as the typical frequency that was previously claimed for this repeater.”

Since their discovery in the 1960s, FRBs have been heralded as proof of alien life but astronomers take more conservative views.

Other explanations put forward include a cataclysmic solar event such as a neutron star collapsing into a black hole or that they are transmitted by a young, highly magnetized neutron star.

    “Several striking passages on this issue were written by David, son of Jesse. David is a towering Biblical figure. A fierce warrior, a revered king who was himself deeply reverent. Highly intelligent and wonderfully poetic, he wrote much of the Book of Psalms and some of the most beautiful passages of scripture. Among these is Psalm 19, where David extols God’s handiwork in the stars. But he doesn’t only extol, he tells us that the stars bear a message. Watch his choice of verbs [emphasis added]:

    1 …The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. 2 Day after day they pour forth SPEECH ; night after night they display knowledge. 3 There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. 4 Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world…

    David chose verb after verb which says that the stars communicate. An intriguing passage. But isn’t it just poetry? Isn’t David just speaking with a poet’s elegant symbolism?

    • Indeed, the language and speech of the heavens are not our language and speech, but we do know for absolute certainty the heavens do declare, their knowledge displays, and goes out into all the earth – voicing the glory of God!
