Giant fans to cool water and reduce heat stress on the Great Barrier Reef will be trialled from early next year and partially funded by a $2.2 million Turnbull government investment.

Under the Reef Havens proposal, eight large, slow-moving, solar-powered impellers draw cool water from depths of up to 30 metres and distribute it at surface level.

The water mixers, which will be attached to a floating pontoon, will be installed in a one-kilometre area along the northern parts of Moore Reef during the summer months over the next three years.

The Reef and Rainforest Research Centre in Cairns will spearhead the project and managing director Sheriden Morris hoped the ReefMix devices could help protect high-value coral.

“Doing that will require a concerted, worldwide response to climate change.

“While that is happening, Reef Havens will try to protect limited areas of high-value coral from increasing health pressures across the rest of the system.

“We absolutely have to reduce emissions and decarbonise economies, but as we’ve seen here in north Queensland over the past couple of summers, that’s not enough.”

It is estimated the fans could help reduce average surface temperatures by 0.7 degrees during potential bleaching conditions in the summer months.

The ReefMixes will be subject to environmental management plans before they are deployed and will be used with other efforts to build “coral refuges”, including crown-of-thorns starfish control.

Federal Environment Minister Josh Frydenberg said the federal government contribution of $2.2m was part of the Reef 2050 Plan.

“Taking on innovative research projects like this demonstrates the government is leaving no stone unturned in its efforts to protect the Reef,” Mr Frydenberg said.

The Reef and Rainforest Research Centre and the Association of Marine Park Tourism Operators will also contribute financially to the project.
