President Jacob Zuma “resigns”

South African President Jacob Zuma resigned on Wednesday, bringing an end to his scandal-marred tenure and leaving the nation’s leadership in the hands of the ruling African National Congress’s new leader, Cyril Ramaphosa.

“The ANC should never be divided in my name,” Zuma said in a 30-minute farewell address to the nation.

“I have therefore come to the decision to resign as the president of the republic with immediate effect,” he said.

Zuma, 75, said no life should be lost in his name and that no leader should stay longer than the people want him to.

Zuma nonetheless said he disagreed with the way the ANC had shoved him towards an early exit after the election of Ramaphosa as party president in December.

He spoke after the ANC announced it would hold a parliamentary vote of no-confidence in him on Thursday.

Ramaphosa, who was served as Deputy President since 2014, will become acting president and the National Assembly must choose a replacement for Zuma within 30 days.

He is one of South Africa’s richest men, with Forbes estimating his wealth at $675 million

  1. Yes he was kicked out. He had no choice. We have been trying to oust him as a country for a long time. He singlehandedly devalued the Rand currency every time he opened his mouth. He never finished school, nothing stopped him when he was rich and powerful to at least learn how to count. He stole billions and wangled himself into every major deal the country made, so all his mates kept covering for him as they would also face jail time if he was prosecuted. He has over 800 criminal charges that was brought against him, but his office protected him. His very worried comrades kept him there.
