Merkel on the edge but survives

A row over the handling of migration in has plunged her three-month-old “grand coalition” into crisis, forcing the German leader to scramble to try to strike deals with individual EU members.

Horst Seehofer, head of the German Chancellor’s Bavarian allies, said on Sunday he saw no alternative to rejecting some migrants at Germany’s border, a party source said, in a move which could escalate his conflict with Mrs Merkel.

Nine months after Mrs Merkel was weakened after losing votes to the far right in elections, she was left with no choice but to seek help from her European Union neighbours to settle a deep conflict with her allies which could threaten her three-month-old coalition.

But interior minister Mr Seehofer, CSU’s chairman, told party colleagues in Munich that turning away migrants at the border – opposed by Mrs Merkel – was the country’s only option, and a discussion with the German Chancellor late Saturday had been fruitless, a party source said.

Mrs Merkel and CSU’s leader, who are entrenched in their positions, may fail to sort out their differences, a party source said.

Asylum seekers whose “first entry into the European Union was Spain” will be returned by Germany to Spain, the Spanish government said in a written statement.

Germany will also pay for the cost of their return.

Mrs Merkel made requests for the agreement during the EU summit in meetings on the sidelines with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Spain said.

In return, Mrs Merkel will give the go ahead for family reunification to take place in Germany.

The move will see 2,900 people who presently live in Greece, reunited with their families in Germany, according to Greek newspaper Kathimerini.
