Namibia follows South Africa with pledge to expropriate land

Namibian President Hage Geingob has called for a change to the constitution to allow the government to expropriate land from white citizens and redistribute it to the majority black population.

“Many Namibians were driven off their productive land,” Geingob said during his opening speech at a national land policy conference in the capital Windhoek.

According to him, the “willing-buyer willing-seller principle has not delivered results.” Under the practice the land owner must first offer the government an option to buy the farmland. The government can then buy the land and redistribute it.

Geingob said that careful consideration should be given to expropriation, stressing that “the fundamental issue is the inequality…”

He also pointed to similar proposals made by South Africa’s government, claiming “We also share a burning land issue and a racialized distribution of land resources with South Africa.”

“This comes from a common history of colonial dispossession. What we also agree to is that the status quo will not be allowed to continue.”

Political parties and NGOs have criticized the government’s attempts to change land reform measures. The conference has been boycotted by some civil society organizations and political parties for allegedly having predetermined outcomes.

According to AFP news agency, two former presidents of Namibia, Sam Nujoma and Hifikepunye Pohamba, said the government should only pay “for things like equipment on the farm and not the land.”

The Namibian government plans to transfer nearly half of its arable agricultural land, about 15 million hectares (58,000 square miles), to disadvantaged black citizens. Statistics from the Namibia Agriculture Union showed that 27 percent of land had been redistributed by the end of 2015.

Thousands of black Namibians were driven off their land during Germany’s colonization of Namibia in the 19th and 20th centuries. Many of them were either killed or forced to resettle in barren areas.

    • Nigeria has some bad things going on in it; although in Nigeria, the conflict is conscious of some who are against the large and growing Christian influence. If the conflict in South Africa had the gospel at the heart of the conflict, like in Nigeria, then the truth of Christ would be able to bring understanding to what is happening in South Africa.

The conflict you describe above pits racial and ethnic groups against each other, and that kind of understanding does not present a clear understanding. Why? Because racial and ethnic conflicts are fundamentality the problem, even your own statement of “outsiders” recognizes the conflict: “outsiders of different racial, ethnic, and nationalities” are taking “native black indigenous” land/economy. That kind of racial, ethnic, and national conflict falls into the trap of those who are trying to oppress the Kwa Zulu Natal local Black Indigenous and ethnic people. The oppressors are against the locals, but you are against the outsiders. Well, the outsiders are already against the locals, according to you, so you have already fallen prey to the oppressors desires. You have made the conflict to be about “locals versus outsiders” defined by racial and ethnic qualities. That is what the oppressors want and that is what you are doing. You are only doing what the oppressors want and have not been able to solve the real problem.

Here is the real problem. There is only one God and Savior and He is Jesus Christ. Believe and repent in Jesus Christ. Bow the knee to Christ only. Submit only to the one and only true God. Unbelievers are caught up in a conflict with no real solutions and blame racial and ethnic inequalities when the only solution is not defined by racial and ethnic barriers, those barriers are false. All races and ethnicities are offered the gospel of our God and Savior, and some Nigerian’s, Chinese, Indian’s, and Kwa Zulu Natal will believe. And then they will be brothers and sisters in Christ, true friends. Yet some will not believe so they will only blame and find problems with no real solutions.

      GOD bless

    • The following article is a good example of what some Nigerians acknowledge as the real problem. The Nigerian government wants the local conflict to be about “farmers and herders”. Yet, the real problem is Christians are being persecuted. A Christian can be a farmer or herder, and the problem is solved, but some people want the problem to be between races, ethnicities, and nationalities, which is what the oppressors want too, so the problem is never solved outside of Christ:

“This conflict has some insidious undertones. Reactions by the Government of Nigeria and by some media outlets are chilling. They refuse to acknowledge that the Christian community is under assault. The conflict is referred to as “conflicts” or “issues” between herdsmen who are Fulani and farmers who for the most part are Christians. The Fulani have a calculated plan, in which they seize the land of Christian farmers, then change the deeds to show that they are in fact the legal owners of the land in question.”
